Adams Library Celebrates Black History Month
In honor of African American History Month, the library’s February exhibit focuses on three themes; The History of Black Economic Empowerment, The Centennial of the National Urban League, and the Urban League in Rhode Island: a Glimpse of the past from the Dorothy Hazard Witherby Hunt – James Williams Papers. Materials from the library collections are included, particularly items from Special Collections including clippings, photos and pamphlets from the early days of the Providence Urban League. The exhibit will be available through the month of February. A LibGuide for African American History Month is also available.

Annie Smith Peck
An exhibition on Annie Smith Peck is on display in Adam’s Library until Feb. 15. Born in Providence in 1850, Peck was a mountain climber who scaled peaks all over the world, a professor at Purdue University and Smith College, a public lecturer and a strong advocate for women’s suffrage. Last year, Peck, an 1872 graduate of the Rhode Island Normal School (a forerunner of RIC), was posthumously inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. RIC president Nancy Carriuolo accepted on Peck’s behalf.
Revolution in the Air: Opposing Viewpoints in Social Activism
Viewpoints in social activism are often extreme. What can be learned from the fringes of the political and social justice spectrums? Is it possible to meet in the middle? The Social and Political Materials Collection contains publications related to American social movements from the 1960s-1980s. A Special Collections exhibit showcasing a variety of these publications is located on Level 4 of the Library.
