The asterisk is a truncation symbole (i.e. cosmetic*=cosmetic or cosmetics).
Remember: A product like L'Oreal's RevitaLift could be described as a cosmetic, a beauty adid, or a health care product. Therfore, using the Boolean "OR" to combine synonyms can be a useful strategy.

Web resources

Many information resources provided by Adams Library or by the HELIN Consortium, especially the type of database listed above under "Periodical indices", are web-resident. They are value-added, edited resources which are fundamentally different from many of the websites you will find by using a web search engine. The page on evaluation below give you some academic criteria to apply in assessing whether an information source is appropriate and credible.

International Organizations

ESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific)

Includes both narrative and statistical information on the 56 countries of Asia and the Pacific region.  Covers categories such as: Population and Rural and Urban Development; Social Development; Environment and Natural Resources; Transport, Communications, Infrastructure and Tourism.  Note especially the source Asia and the Pacific in Figures under the category Statistics.

ECLAC (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean)

Be sure to choose Contents from the opening menu to see the categories of data covered, which include Economic Development, Foreign Investment, Links to the Global Economy, Population and Development, Social Development, Statistics, Transport, and others. More than 50% of the documents are in English and the rest are in Spanish.

Population Reference Bureau

This nonprofit organization collects data on population related to social, environmental, and political issues.

United Nations Industrial Development Organization

Industrial Statistics category includes wage rates for individual countries, as well as general economic data by region and country

World Bank

World Bank Group collects data on both social and economic indicators, focusing particularly on developing nations of the world.

World Trade Organization

Use the Topical Index or Site Map as starting points.   Much country-specific data is embedded in tables or documents that are world or regional overviews.

International Chamber of Commerce

Includes information on thousands of member companies from over 140 countries
