Searching for Sources on Native Americans in the HELIN Catalog

To find any materials on a given subject in the HELIN Catalog, you can use a subject search or a keyword or word search

A keyword search will search for the terms in the author, title, notes, or subject of the catalog record.  This is good to use if you are uncertain of the correct term and want to find a wide variety of materials.

A subject search requires you to use specific terms from the Library of Congress Subject Headings (see the big red books in the reference area).  Using these terms will give you a more accurate search.  Some commonly used terms relating to Native Americans are listed below.

Suggested Subject Headings

Indians of North America (use for Native Americans)

Indians of North America - (geographic term)
Indians of North America - New England
Indians of North America - Northeast

Other terms that relate to specific cultural aspects are formed differently

Indian Art North America
Indian Pottery North America
