Living on campus can make your stay at Rhode Island College a truly cosmopolitan experience. You will meet and live with students from other backgrounds, other states, and even other countries. And you can experience what it means to live independently.
Because the College’s facilities are clustered, it’s only a short walk from your room to the dining center, the library, classrooms, and the Technology Center in Horace Mann Hall. When you live on campus, it is always easier to make it to a basketball game, attend a concert, or catch a show.
Each of the five residence halls features social lounges, along with laundry and kitchen facilities. Each hall has its own character and style. Browne, Thorp, and Weber Halls are designed with suites of eight to twelve single rooms adjacent to a study-lounge area. Sweet and Willard Halls feature double-occupancy rooms, and Sweet Hall has provisions for students with disabilities. In total, the residence halls can accommodate 830 students. Four are co-ed and one is for women students. A new 366-bed residence hall is planned for fall of 2007.
There is a wide variety of social and educational programs presented in the halls by the resident assistant staff, hall councils, and the Resident Student Association. Each hall sponsors events for fun, relaxation, and self-enhancement, including barbecues, movies, lectures, sports competitions, dances, tutoring sessions, and charitable events.
Rhode Island College is unique among colleges and universities in that it has its Campus Security Office based in one of the residence halls. The College has enjoyed a good record for the personal safety of its students. Security measures include escort service, surveillance cameras, computerized door access, and regular rounds by College security officers. In collaboration with campus security, WXIN, the College radio station, also offers an escort service to RIC students. The Campus Security Report can be found at http://www.ric.edu/studentlife/securityreport05.htm.
College Health Services, located on the ground floor of Browne Hall, provides confidential, primary health care to all students. Health Services is open year round and is staffed by a full-time nurse practitioner, registered nurses, and part-time physicians. Visits are available by appointment.
