There are many ingredients in a mix that leads to competent staff who have the knowledge and skills to effectively guide adult learners in meeting their goals. Past experience, on the job training, and ongoing professional learning in a variety of forms are just some of those ingredients. In order to provide a structure to support professional learning, the PD Center with practitioners are involved in several initiatives.
The New Practitioner Orientation is provides an overview to the adult education system, its policies and priorities, to practitioners new to the field and/or new to Rhode Island. Two-day sessions are offered for staff working 15 hours or more in adult education programs, and one-day sessions are offered for part-time (up to 15 hours) staff. Topics include accountability, assessment, characteristics of adult learners and practitioners, systems and structures and policies relevant to adult education.
A group of hard working adult education teachers from across the state have been meeting to wrestle with the question: "What should adult educators know and be able to do in order to be effective at their work?" They have explored what other states are doing, reviewed teacher competency lists, including the draft list that resulted from the Governor's Adult Literacy Task Force, and developed guiding principles for their work. By spring, they hope to have a draft set of recommendations for the field and RIDE to review outlining a structure and process for enhancing the professional knowledge of adult education practitioners in the state.
