Matt
O'Brien
enters his third season as an assistant men’s
basketball coach at Rhode Island College. He assists head coach Bob
Walsh with all phases of the RIC
men’s basketball program including recruiting, scouting, administering
practices and game coaching.
O’Brien jumped into the coaching ranks after a four-year basketball career at
Elmira College. He played at Elmira from 2001-05, captaining the team
as senior in 2004-05. He received the team’s Coach’s Award as a
freshman in 2001-02.
O’Brien worked
in the Elmira men’s basketball office from 2003-05 where his duties
included scouting of opponents in preparation for games, hosting and
handling recruits who visited campus and coordinating game film
exchange. In 2005, he was an assistant coach on Elmira’s junior
varsity men’s basketball team. He also has an extensive background
coaching at summer basketball camps, having worked at Providence
College, Princeton University, the University of Rhode Island and at
the United States Military Academy at West Point.
A native of
Riverside, Rhode Island, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history and
adolescent education from Elmira in May 2005.
