RIC AND USM SPLIT
|

Providence, RI—Rhode Island
College and Southern Maine split a doubleheader in collegiate softball
action. RIC is 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference. USM
is 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the LEC. |

RIC took game one in eight innings,
culminating with Melanie Miller scoring on Megan Ponte’s
RBI fielder’s choice. The Anchorwomen trailed 3-1 until the sixth
inning when Sue Gaber singled in the tying runs. Kim
Warrington went the distance for RIC, improving to 7-4 with six
strikeouts in the win. USM’s Renee Heath went 2-4 with two RBI
and Melissa Henderson took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the
season. |

|
USM bounced back in game two behind
Katie Mainville’s five strikeout, six-hit, 2-0 shutout
performance. The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning
with Kristen Tong scoring on a passed ball. Kristi Steward’s
RBI single in the seventh gave USM an insurance run. RIC’s Casey
Soares was the hard-luck loser, falling to 2-2 despite allowing
only two hits and one earned run. |

Babson on Tuesday, Apr. 1 at 3:30 p.m. |
