RIC Softball Finishes Second in the Little East Conference

RIC to host UMass-Boston in tourney opener tomorrow

Providence, RI--Head Coach Maria Morin’s Anchorwomen finished the regular season with a 19-11-1 overall record and a 9-4-1 mark (second place) in the Little East Conference. It is the highest LEC finish in RIC softball history for the Anchorwomen. RIC will host seventh-seeded UMass-Boston in opening round action on Tuesday, Apr. 29 at 3:30 p.m.

The Anchorwomen dropped a doubleheader to Western Connecticut, 8-0 and 5-0, on Apr. 24 before rebounding to sweep Eastern Connecticut, 10-2, and 2-1 on Apr. 27.

Senior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 30 games, starting all of them. She is batting .400 with 15 runs, 36 hits, 11 doubles and 20 RBI.

Junior pitcher/designated player Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in 25 games, starting 22 of them. She is 14-8 with a 2.06 ERA, 18 complete games, three shutouts and 140 strikeouts in 149.2 innings.

Sophomore pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in 11 games, starting eight of them. She is 5-2 with a 0.88 ERA, five complete games, one shutout and 60 strikeouts in 48.0 innings pitched. As a hitter, she has played in 28 games, starting all of them. She is batting .329 with 20 runs, 27 hits, four doubles and five triples, 12 RBI and four stolen bases.

Senior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 31 games, starting 30 of them. She is batting .276 with 15 runs, 16 hits, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

Junior center fielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 31 games, starting all of them. She is batting .308 with 15 runs, 24 hits and eight RBI.

Sophomore catcher Rachael Caldwell (Richmond, RI) has played in 29 games, starting all of them. She is batting .322 with 17 runs, 29 hits, six doubles and 12 RBI.

Senior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 31 games, starting all of them. She is batting .244 with 16 runs, 21 hits, two doubles, two triples, 12 RBI and one stolen base.

Sophomore infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in 27 games, starting 26 of them. She is batting .321 with 13 runs, 26 hits, three doubles, ten RBI and one stolen base.

Junior outfielder Hollie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) has played in 16 games, starting ten of them. She is batting .400 with seven runs, ten hits, four RBI and one stolen base.

Freshman infielder Ashley Brooks (Hamden, CT) has played in 21 games, starting 15 of them. She is batting .366 with ten runs, 15 hits and five RBI.

Freshman outfielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) has played in 14 games, starting 11 of them. She is batting .217 with three runs, five hits and one RBI.

Sophomore infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in ten games, starting four of them. She is batting .176 with one run, three hits and one RBI.

Freshman outfielder Megan Ponte (South Kingstown, RI) has played in 21 games, starting 17 of them. She is batting .250 with six runs, 11 hits, six RBI and four stolen bases.

Freshman outfielder Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) has played in 17 games, starting two of them. She is batting .083, has one hit, has scored one run and has two stolen bases on the season.

Freshman outfielder Casie Lyons (Hudson, MA) has played five games, starting three of them. She has scored one run on the season.

Freshman pitcher Laura Papa (Coventry, RI) has appeared in three games, starting one of them. She is 0-1 with a 21.00 ERA and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitches.
