Little East Conference Tournament Game |

Providence, RI— The
Rhode Island College women’s soccer team won their first-ever
Little East Conference Tournament game with a dramatic 2-1
double-overtime victory over Plymouth State College on Tuesday, Nov.
5. |

Junior defender Malissa
Holden (Warwick, RI) scored both goals to lift fifth-seeded RIC
past the fourth-seeded Panthers. Holden opened the game’s scoring
in the 56th minute and then ended the contest in the 109th
minute. Both goals were on direct kicks. |
|
|
|
With just 1:40 remaining
in the second overtime period when Holden scored, the two clubs
would have been forced to shoot penalty kicks to decide the winner
had the game ended in a tie. RIC sophomore goalkeeper Melissa
Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) made eight saves to preserve the
win. |

Head Coach Ryan Angel’s
team advances to face top-seeded Keene State College on Thursday,
Nov. 7. The Owls will host the Anchorwomen and the game is scheduled
to begin at 6 p.m. |
|
|
|
It was the first
post-season victory of any kind for the women’s soccer program,
which began play in 1995. The Anchorwomen improve to 1-2 all-time in
LEC Tournament competition. RIC, which had never beaten Plymouth
State previously, improves to 1-9-1 all-time against the Panthers.
RIC had been eliminated by PSC in each of the previous two LEC
Tournaments (2001, 2000) it saw action in. |
