2002-03 Men’s Basketball Season Summary

Overall; 5-9 (seventh place) in the Little East Conference |

RI--Head
Coach Michael Kelly’s team finished the 2002-03 season with a
13-13 overall record and a 5-9 (seventh place) mark in the Little East
Conference. RIC’s season was ended with a 90-75 loss at Plymouth State
in the opening round of the 2003 LEC Tournament on Feb. 25. |

|
The
Anchormen bettered their win total from last season by 12 games. The
team’s 13 wins this winter was one better than the combined victories
of the previous three seasons (1, 8, 3). |
|
|
|
Senior
forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) closed out his career
having played in 100 games, starting 44 of them. His 100 games played
is good for ninth all-time at RIC. He totaled 523 points, 252
rebounds, 85 assists and 50 steals over the course of his career. He
averaged 5.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.5 steals per game
for his career. |

|
In 2002-03,
he played in 26 games, starting one of them. He averaged 1.1 points
and 0.7 rebounds per game. |
|
|
|
As a junior
in 2001-02, Costigan played in 25 games, starting 21 of them. He
averaged 4.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 0.6 steals and 1.4 assists per game
on the season. Costigan scored a season-high 13 points vs. Hartwick. |
|
|
|
As a
sophomore in 2000-01, he played in 24 games, starting ten of them. He
averaged 6.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.6 steals per
game. He recorded a season-high 18 points vs. Eastern Connecticut. He
connected on a career-high five three-point baskets vs. Eastern
Nazarene. He tied a career-high with eight rebounds vs. Keene State. |

|
As a
freshman in 1999-00, Costigan
played in
25 games, starting 12 of them. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.2 rebounds,
0.9 assists and 0.5 steals per game. He scored a career-high 26 points
vs. UMass-Dartmouth. Costigan was named the Little East Conference’s
Rookie of the Week once on the year. |

He is a
criminal justice major and a 1999 graduate of St. Raphael Academy. |
|
|
|
Junior
guard Kamran Alemdar (Stockholm, Sweden) played in 26 games,
starting 25 of them. He averaged 13.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6
assists per game. He registered season-highs of 29 points vs. Western
Connecticut on Feb. 11, seven rebounds on three separate occasions,
five assists vs. Bridgewater on Jan. 9 and three steals twice. Alemdar
connected on a season-high seven three-pointers, going 7-10, vs.
Western Connecticut. |

Junior
forward Dan Bower (Sackets Harbor, NY) played in two games. He
averaged 1.0 rebounds per game. |
|
|
|
Junior
guard Lester Carter (Boston, MA) played in 25 games, starting
seven of them. He averaged 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists
per game. Carter recorded season-highs of 22 points vs. Salve Regina
on Feb. 5, ten rebounds vs. Southern Maine on Feb. 15, five assists
vs. Johnson and Wales on Dec. 10 and three steals vs. Southern Maine
on Jan. 14. Carter made a season-high 12 free throws, making 12-14,
against Salve Regina. |

Junior
guard Andre Daley (Boston, MA) played in 26 games, starting 23
of them. He averaged 12.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6
steals per game. He registered season-highs of 21 points vs. Eastern
Connecticut on Jan. 25, eight rebounds vs. St. Joseph’s (NY) on Jan.
3, ten assists vs. Keene State on Feb. 8 and six steals vs. Newbury on
Jan. 7. |

Junior
guard Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) played in three games.
He averaged 0.7 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. |

|
Junior
forward Johnafer White (Boston, MA) was named Second Team
All-Little East Conference. White played in 24 games, starting 21 of
them. He averaged 13.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He recorded
nine double-doubles on the season (points and rebounds). White posted
season highs of 26 points vs. UMass-Dartmouth on Jan. 28, 18 rebounds
vs. Southern Maine on Jan. 14 and four assists vs. Johnson & Wales on
Dec. 10. He was named the LEC’s Co-Player of the Week once this
season. |

Sophomore
forward Brendan Baker (South Yarmouth, MA) played in 20 games.
He averaged 0.9 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
forward Mike Bartunek (Durham, CT) played in seven games. He
averaged 2.4 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He scored a season-high
nine points vs. Becker on Nov. 22. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) played in four games.
He averaged 2.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He grabbed a
season-high eight rebounds vs. Becker on Nov. 22. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
forward Harry Grigsby (Providence, RI) played in nine games. He
averaged 0.4 points and 0.4 rebounds per game. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) played in 26 games, starting
24 of them. He averaged 9.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He
posted season-highs of 16 points vs. Becker on Nov. 22, 13 rebounds
vs. Eastern Connecticut on Dec. 7, and four steals vs. Keene State on
Jan. 11. |

Sophomore
guard Dante Phillips (South Yarmouth, MA) played in one game.
He averaged 3.0 points per game. Phillips missed most of the season
with a knee injury he suffered in practice. |
|
|
|
Freshman
guard Gandhi Arias (Hartford, CT) played in 18 games. He
averaged 1.3 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. He registered
season-highs of five points vs. Becker on Nov. 22 and five assists vs.
St. Joseph’s (NY) on Jan. 3. |
|
|
|
Freshman
guard K.C. Grandfield (Dartmouth, MA) played in 26 games,
starting all of them. He averaged 5.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3
steals, and 5.0 assists per game. He was the only player to start
every game this season. He posted season-highs of 14 points vs.
Plymouth State on Feb. 25, ten rebounds vs. UMass-Boston on Feb. 1,
ten assists vs. UMass-Boston on Dec. 14, and six steals vs. Johnson &
Wales on Dec. 10. |

Freshman
forward Brendan Mullen (Fairhaven, MA) played in 15 games. He
averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. He recorded
season-highs of five points vs. Becker on Nov. 22 and seven rebounds
vs. Eastern Connecticut on Dec. 7. |
|
|
|
Freshman
forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) played in 21 games, starting
three of them. He averaged 8.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He
recorded season-highs of 15 points vs. Plymouth State and seven
rebounds vs. Southern Maine on Feb. 15. Stanko earned LEC Rookie of
the Week honors twice this season. |
