Earn First Conference Win |

Providence, RI— The
Rhode Island College Anchorwomen defeated the University of Southern
Maine Huskies, 3-2, at home on Saturday, Sept. 27. RIC freshman
midfielder Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) lofted a shot from
15 yards out that just made it over the head of USM junior
goalkeeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, MA) that proved to be the
game-winner with just eight minutes left in the game. |

USM sophomore forward Devin
Edwards (South Paris, ME) started the scoring by bending a ball
past RIC junior goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI)
in the first minute of play to give the Huskies an early, 1-0, lead.
The Anchorwomen answered back at the 12-minute mark of the first
half when Gavin scored the first of her two goals. USM scored early
in the second half on a rebound goal by sophomore forward Eva
Hudson (Warner, NH). Neither team could muster scoring chances
for much of the second half until RIC freshman forward Erika
Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA) received a pass from junior
midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Situate, RI) and scored to
tie the game, 2-2 with 13 minutes left to play. The Anchormen got on
the board again just four minutes later as Gavin scored to send RIC
ahead for good at the 81:47 mark. |

RIC’s Carpentier made
two saves between the posts but had to be relieved by junior Jessica
Moran (Cumberland, RI) in the second half due to injury. Moran
stopped two shots in 42 minutes of play. For USM, Ansley made a
game-high five saves. |
