Second Half Lifts Anchorwomen To Victory
|
|
|
|
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College Anchorwomen defeated the Salve Regina University
Seahawks, 2-0, at home on Wednesday, Oct. 8. After a scoreless first
half of play, RIC got one goal each from freshmen forwards Jennifer
LeDoux (Easthampton, MA) and Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth,
MA) to give junior goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket,
RI) all she would need and the Anchorwomen a victory. |
|
|
|
Neither team
found the net through the first half and much of the second half until
LeDoux began the scoring in the 62nd minute. RIC junior
forward Alexis Bouchard (Warren, RI) took the ball towards goal
and had her shot saved by Salve Regina goalkeeper, freshman, Alison
Smith (Point Pleasant, NJ). The save, however, caromed off Smith
and to the foot of LeDoux who slipped the ball past the goalie and
into the net. The Anchorwomen would get an insurance goal 18 minutes
later in the 80th minute as Haaland kicked in a ball that
was loose in front of the keeper. The goal was her team-leading eighth
of the season. |

|
|
RIC’s
Carpentier made five saves between the posts en route to her third
shutout of the year, adding to her all-time RIC best total of 15.
Salve Regina used two goalkeepers, Smith played 85 minutes and stopped
eight shots while freshman Nicole Ferreira (Tiverton, RI)
played the final five minutes, making one save. |
|
|
|
With the
victory, RIC improves its record to 6-6 while Salve Regina drops to
5-8-1. In upcoming action, RIC will play at UMass-Dartmouth on
Saturday, Oct. 11 beginning at 1 p.m. |
