TEIXEIRA’S GOLDEN GOAL GIVES RIC THE VICTORY
|
|
Providence, RI—Sophomore
forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) scored two goals, including
the game-winner in overtime, and assisted on another as Rhode Island
College held off Bridgewater State to win, 3-2 (ot), in collegiate
men’s soccer action. RIC has now won six of its last seven contests
and improves to 9-4, while Bridgewater State falls to 5-4-1. |

The
Anchormen jumped out to any early lead in the 34th minute
on a goal by freshman forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI).
The goal came off of a cross from sophomore midfielder Dan
Toro (Pawtucket, RI) then a pass from Teixeira. BSC answered back
in the 37th minute as sophomore forward Matt Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA) headed in a goal to tie the game, 1-1. |
|
|
|
RIC got back
in the lead early in the second half when Teixeira scored the first of
his two goals as he controlled a cross from freshman midfielder Nic
Rossi (North Kingstown), turned and fired the ball past BSC
goalkeeper, freshman, John Naughton (Braintree, MA). With just
10 minutes to play, BSC tied the game up, 2-2, with a goal from
sophomore midfielder Michael Brammer (Norton, MA). The full 90
minutes would not be enough to decide the outcome as the Anchormen and
Bears played overtime. |
|
|
|
The
Anchormen did not waste any time in the extra period as just two
minutes in, Teixeira scored his 21st goal of the year,
seventh of the game-winning variety, and second of the game to give
RIC the victory. Senior midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI)
hit a free kick into the box where Teixeira controlled it and put it
into the back of the net. |
|
|
|
RIC junior
goalkeeper Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) made two saves to earn
the win, while his counterpart, Naughton, also made two stops in a
losing effort. |

In upcoming
action, RIC will travel to Western Connecticut on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7
p.m. |
