RIC FALLS SHORT
OF UPSET BID |

Providence, RI— The
Rhode Island College Anchormen dropped a close battle, 3-2, in its
final regular-season home contest of the year to the Keene State
College Owls. In a hard fought game that included a combined 49
fouls, the Owls, ranked ninth in this week’s NSCAA New England
Top-Ten Poll, scored a goal in the 53rd minute by junior
forward Jason Lombardo (Woburn, MA) and held on to defeat the
Anchormen. |
|
|
|
Keene State’s Lombardo
opened the scoring in the first half in the 34th minute
when he scored on a penalty kick. Just seven minutes later, the Owls
extended their lead with a goal from junior midfielder John Harke
(Leeds, MA). Harke took an indirect kick, which was first
touched by two Owls, and beat RIC junior goalkeeper Jason Nelson
(Pascoag, RI). |

|
With things going the
Owls’ way, the Anchormen caught a break when sophomore forward Kyle
Teixeira (Warren, RI) was fouled in the box resulting in a
penalty kick which he put past Keene State junior goalkeeper Brandon
Beck (Johnston, NY), bringing the home team within one goal.
That one-goal margin quickly disappeared in the second half when, in
the 49th minute, Teixeira broke down the left side of the
field, appeared to prepare to shoot, but instead passed the ball to
sophomore midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) who shot the
ball into a wide open net. The momentum, seized by RIC, would be
taken back by Keene State who scored just four minutes after the
Anchormen tied the game. Keene State’s Lombardo scored what proved
to be the game-winner, his second goal of the game, when he took a
cross by Harke and headed it into the net past a diving Nelson. RIC
kept pushing forward, attempting to tie, but in the end it was Keene
State taking home the one goal victory. |

|
|
RIC’s Nelson made 11
saves in defeat, while his counterpart, Beck, made two stops in the
victory. |

In upcoming action, RIC
will travel to Worcester State on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. |
