RIC Women’s Soccer Advances in
2003 Little East Conference Tournament

Plymouth, NH—The sixth-seeded Rhode Island College Anchorwomen defeated third-seeded Plymouth State, 3-1, to advance to the semi-final round of the 2003 Little East Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Next up for head coach Ryan Angel’s troops is second-seeded Eastern Connecticut, which had a bye in the first round. RIC will square off with the Warriors on Friday, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. The game will be played at Keene State, the host for the semi-final and championship games.

Junior forward Lauren Tomasso (Cranston, RI) netted the game-winner, while freshman forward Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA) and freshman midfielder Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) added tallies of their own in the win over the Panthers. Junior goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) made eight saves.

The win was sweet revenge for the Anchorwomen, who lost a tough game, 1-0, to PSU in the regular season finale on last Saturday, Nov. 1. The playoff win only the second in the program’s nine-year history. The Anchorwomen won their first-ever post-season victory by beating, ironically Plymouth State, in double overtime during the 2002 tourney.
