North Providence Native to Attend |
|
Providence, RI--Rhode Island College sophomore Liz Barrette (North Providence, RI) has been selected to participate in the 2004 NCAA Leadership Conference, which will be held May 30-June 3 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. |

The mission of the NCAA Leadership Conference is to develop a diverse group of student-athletes who will actively participate in and experience a multitude of challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become change agents on their campuses and in their communities. It will provide the NCAA student-athletes with the opportunity to discuss and explore critical issues facing their peers; to enhance their leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. |

A total of 324 student-athletes have been invited to attend the 2004 NCAA Leadership Conference. Over 1,175 student-athletes were nominated from NCAA member institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. |

|
Barrette is a two-sport athlete at Rhode Island College, playing women's tennis and basketball. As a sophomore in 2003, Barrette was 12-5 (.706) at number one singles and 13-4 (.765) number one doubles for a team-high 18.5 points during the tennis season. Barrette tied a school-record for a season with 13 doubles wins and was tied for the team lead in singles wins. She is currently 13th in career points all-time at RIC, 18th in singles victories and ninth in doubles victories. |

During the basketball season, she played in 18 games. She averaged 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. Barrette registered season-highs of eight points vs. Plymouth State on Jan. 24, seven rebounds vs. Thomas College on Jan. 3, three assists vs. Western Connecticut on Jan. 27 and one steal twice. |

Participants will engage in a variety of developmental activities designed to enhance their communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills and will also participate in collaborative projects and critical thinking. Student-athletes will develop their leadership skills through interactive hands-on work in small groups, and have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences. |

|
Participating student-athletes will represent all NCAA Divisions, a variety of different sports, both genders and different ethnicities. |
|
|
|
Also nominated for this conference from RIC were junior soccer player German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI), sophomore basketball player Brendan Mullen (Fairhaven, MA) and sophomore women's outdoor track and field student-athlete Serena Morrison (New Haven, CT). |
