Baseball Season Summary

(19-16 Overall; 6-8 in the Little East
Conference)

Coach Jay Grenier’s team (Career record: 276-158-1, .636)
finished the 2004 season with a 19-16 overall record and a 6-8 (fifth
place) mark in the Little East Conference. |
|
|
|
RIC saw its
season end with a 9-0 loss to
Keene
State in the second round of the Little East Conference Tournament on
May 13. RIC dropped the opening round game to second-seeded, and 17th-ranked,
Southern Maine, 7-6, on May 12. This season, the squad played six
games versus teams who were nationally ranked at the time. They were
victorious in two of the games, including a 10-5 victory at
fourth-ranked
Eastern
Connecticut
on Apr. 24. |

Senior
first baseman Eric Gibree (Bristol,
RI)
closed out his career having appeared in 138 games, starting 133 of
them. Gibree owns seven RIC all-time records and five RIC
single-season high marks. His career record include 536 at bats, 110
runs scored, 187 hits, 34 doubles, 300 total bases, ten sacrifice
flies and 717 putouts. He concluded his career with a .349 batting
average, eight triples, 21 home runs, 125 RBI, which is tied for the
all-time RIC record, .560 slugging percentage, 31 walks, .409 on-base
percentage, four stolen bases, 41 assists, and .978 fielding
percentage. |

|
As a senior
in 2004, he was named First Team All-Little East Conference. Gibree
played in 32 games, starting 30 of them. Gibree batted .379 with 44
hits, 13 doubles, four home runs, six walks, 25 runs scored and 26
RBI. Gibree owned a .595 slugging percentage, a .425 on-base
percentage and .970 fielding percentage. |

|
As a junior
in 2003, he was named First Team All-Little East Conference. He played
in 40 games, starting all of them. He batted .358 with 43 runs, 58
hits, ten doubles, three triples, ten home runs, 51 RBI, and one
stolen base. He owned a .642 slugging percentage, a .401 on-base
percentage and a .985 fielding percentage. |

|
As a
sophomore in 2002, Gibree was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.
Gibree played in 32 games, starting all of them. He batted .309 with
20 runs, 38 hits, three doubles, four triples, four home runs, 25 RBI,
and one stolen base. He owned a .496 slugging percentage, a .380
on-base percentage and a .988 fielding percentage. Gibree led the team
in putouts and triples, was second in hits and third in runs. |

|
In 2001, he
injured his knee on the squad’s spring training trip to Florida and
was granted a medical redshirt. Prior to the injury, Gibree played in
five games, starting all of them. Gibree batted .350 with seven hits,
four RBI, five runs, two doubles and one stolen base. He owned a .450
slugging percentage, a .417 on-base percentage and a .923 fielding
percentage. |

|
As a
freshman in 2000, he played in 29 games, starting 26 of them. He
batted .348 with 115 at-bats, 17 runs, 40 hits, 19 RBI, six doubles,
one triple, three home runs, 57 total bases with a .496 slugging
percentage, a .353 on-base percentage and a .973 fielding percentage.
He led the team with 19 RBI on the year. Gibree finished the year
second on the team in batting, hits, total bases and slugging
percentage. |

He is a
communications major and a 1999 graduate of La Salle Academy. |
|
|
|
Junior
infielder Jamie Aldoupolis (Ashland, MA) played in 11 games,
starting three of them. He batted .438 with seven hits, three doubles,
six walks, five runs scored and three RBI. Aldoupolis owned a .625
slugging percentage, a .591 on-base percentage and a .727 fielding
percentage. |

Junior
first baseman/pitcher Matt Brannon (Cranston, RI) played in 19
games, starting 17 of them. He batted .373 with 25 hits, four doubles,
two home runs, four walks, 14 runs scored and 14 RBI. Brannon owns a
.522 slugging percentage, a .423 on-base percentage and a .986
fielding percentage. On the mound, Brannon appeared in ten games,
starting seven of them. He owned a 4-4 record with a 6.94 ERA. In 46.2
innings pitched, he struck out 49 batters. |

Junior
pitcher/outfielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) played
in 33 games, starting all of them. He batted .355 with 50 hits, nine
doubles, one triple, four home runs, 15 walks, 42 runs scored and 34
RBI. Dusablon owned a .518 slugging percentage, a .420 on-base
percentage and a .987 fielding percentage. On the mound, Dusablon
appeared in and started four games. He owned a 2-1 record with a 6.84
ERA. In 26.1 innings pitched, he struck out 21 batters. |

Junior
pitcher Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, RI) appeared in seven games,
starting three of them. He owned a 1-3 record with a 4.32 ERA. In 25.0
innings pitched, he struck out 21 batters. |
|
|
|
Junior
outfielder Chris Higgins (Swansea, MA) played in 35 games,
starting all of them. He batted .382 while leading the team with 58
hits, which tied the single-season RIC record, six home runs, 42 RBI
and 47 runs scored. Higgins also had 13 doubles, five triples, 14
walks, a .651 slugging percentage, a .429 on-base percentage and a
.952 fielding percentage. |

Junior
catcher Eric Kelly (Fall River, MA) played in 22 games,
starting 20 of them. He batted .228 with 18 hits, four doubles, two
home runs, three walks, ten runs scored and 16 RBI. Kelly owned a .354
slugging percentage, a .267 on-base percentage and a .992 fielding
percentage. |

Junior
infielder Mike Luke (Cranston, RI) played in 21 games, starting
18 of them. He batted .306 with 19 hits, three doubles, one home run,
six walks, 15 runs scored and 14 RBI. Luke owned a .403 slugging
percentage, a .408 on-base percentage and a .929 fielding percentage.
Luke was hit by six pitches this spring, which increased his all-time
RIC record total to 24. |

Junior
pitcher James Milano (Johnston, RI) appeared in 12 games,
starting nine of them. He owned a 5-3 record with a team-best 3.84
ERA. In a team-high 70.1 innings pitched, he struck out a team-best 55
batters. |

|
|
Junior
catcher/second baseman Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, RI) played in
13 games, starting six of them. He batted .233 with seven hits, one
double, three walks, five runs scored and three RBI. Pacitto owned a
.267 slugging percentage, a .294 on-base percentage and a 1.000
fielding percentage. |

Junior
infielder Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) played in 25 games,
starting 22 of them. He batted .261 with 24 hits, six doubles, five
walks, 16 runs scored and 16 RBI. Smaldone owned a .326 slugging
percentage, a .304 on-base percentage and a .803 fielding percentage. |

Junior
infielder Brian Trupiano (Franklin, MA) played in 20 games,
starting eight of them. He batted .390 with 16 hits, two doubles, two
home runs, three walks, 12 runs scored and 13 RBI. Trupiano owned a
.585 slugging percentage, a .432 on-base percentage and a .912
fielding percentage. |

Junior
outfielder/pitcher Brandon White (Foster, RI) played in 20
games, starting 18 of them. He batted a team-best .429 with 27 hits,
four doubles, five home runs, a team-high 16 walks, 21 runs scored and
21 RBI. White led the team with a .730 slugging percentage and a .565
on-base percentage, while also contributing a .986 fielding
percentage. On the mound, White appeared in ten games, starting seven
of them. He owned a 2-4 record with a 5.61 ERA. In 43.1 innings
pitched, he struck out 43 batters. He earned LEC Pitcher of the Week
honors once this season. |

|
Sophomore
pitcher Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI) appeared in eight games,
starting two of them. He owned a 2-1 record with a 8.04 ERA. In 28.0
innings pitched, he struck out 14 batters. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
shortstop Ray De La Cruz (Pawtucket, RI) was named First Team
All-Little East Conference and the team’s MVP. He played in 33 games,
starting all of them and was named the squad’s MVP. He batted .379
with 55 hits, eight doubles, three triples, five home runs, eight
walks, 38 runs scored and 27 RBI. De La Cruz owned a .579 slugging
percentage, a .419 on-base percentage and a .852 fielding percentage.
He recorded a RIC single-season record 107 assists. |

|
Sophomore
outfielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI) was named Second Team
All-Little East Conference. Naylor played in 35 games, starting all of
them. He batted .397 with 56 hits, a team-high 14 doubles, five
triples, four home runs, three walks, 34 runs scored and 29 RBI.
Naylor owned a .652 slugging percentage, a .422 on-base percentage and
a .929 fielding percentage. Naylor ended the season on a team-best
21-game hit streak. |

Sophomore
second baseman Adolfo Perez (Miami, FL) played in 20 games,
starting 18 of them. He batted .214 with 12 hits, six doubles, five
walks, nine runs scored and five RBI. Perez owned a .321 slugging
percentage, a .286 on-base percentage and a .945 fielding percentage. |

|
Sophomore
pitcher Bruce Taraska (Exeter, RI) appeared in 13 games. He
owned a 2-0 record with a 6.26 ERA. In 27.1 innings pitched, he struck
out 16 batters. |
|
|
|
Freshman
pitcher Caleb Barber (Mystic, CT) appeared in seven games,
starting three of them. He owned a 1-0 record with a 15.98 ERA. In
16.1 innings pitched, he struck out 12 batters. |
|
|
|
Freshman
pitcher Bobby DeSousa (Fall River, MA) appeared in one game at
the plate. He batted .500 with one hit and one RBI. DeSousa owned a
.500 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. On the mound,
he appeared in eight games. He owned a 0-0 record with a 9.00 ERA. In
10.0 innings pitched, he struck out seven batters. |

Freshman
catcher Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) played in 20 games,
starting 18 of them. He batted .262 with 17 hits, three doubles, one
triple, one home run, 12 walks, 16 runs scored and 19 RBI. Henault
owned a .385 slugging percentage, a .392 on-base percentage and a .976
fielding percentage. |
