2004 Rhode Island College Softball Season Summary

(21-15-1 Overall; 9-5 Second Place in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Maria Morin’s (Career record: 195-167-3, .539) team finished the 2004 season with a 21-15-1 overall record and a 9-5 (second place) mark in the Little East Conference.

RIC saw its season end with a 3-2 loss at Coast Guard in the opening round of the 2004 ECAC tournament. It was the fourth time in six seasons the Anchorwomen qualified for post-season action. The softball program recorded its sixth consecutive 20-win campaign and tied its highest regular season conference finish (second). The Anchorwomen also achieved another milestone this spring as they were ranked number one in New England for two consecutive weeks in April.

RIC was eliminated from the 2004 Little East Conference Tournament with losses to Western Connecticut (6-0) and Eastern Connecticut (5-0) on Apr. 30.

Senior outfielder Hollie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) closed out her collegiate career having played in 77 games, starting 63 of them. She batted .223 with 148 at bats, 33 hits, 17 runs, two doubles, 15 RBI, 15 walks and four stolen bases. She owned a career .236 slugging percentage and .303 on-base percentage.

As a senior in 2004, Benevides played in 21 games, starting 14 of them. She batted .125 with three hits, two walks, four runs scored and two RBI. Benevides owned a .125 slugging percentage, a .192 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

As a junior in 2003, she was named Second Team All-Little East as a utility player. Benevides played in 19 games, starting 12 of them. She batted .365 with seven runs, 11 hits, four RBI and one stolen base. She owned a .367 slugging percentage, a .500 on-base percentage and a .750 fielding percentage.

As a freshman in 2000, she played in 37 games, starting all of them. She batted .202 with 19 hits, six runs, nine RBI, two doubles, three stolen bases, 21 total bases with a .223 slugging percentage, a .257 on-base percentage and a .925 fielding percentage.

Benevides is an international business management major and a 1999 graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth High School. She also lettered in women’s soccer for the Anchorwomen.

Senior outfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) closed out her collegiate career having played in 148 games, starting 145 of them. She batted .248 with 412 at bats, 102 hits, 56 runs, six doubles, 32 RBI, 24 walks, 16 sacrifice hits and ten stolen bases. She owned a career .262 slugging percentage and a .292 on-base percentage. Gaber is second all-time at RIC in at bats and fifth in sacrifice hits.

As a senior in 2004, Gaber was named Second Team All-Little East Conference as an outfielder. She played in 37 games, starting all of them. She batted .288 with 38 hits, four doubles, eight walks, 21 runs scored and six RBI. Gaber owned a .318 slugging percentage, a .326 on-base percentage and a .938 fielding percentage.

As a junior in 2003, she was named Second Team All-Little East as an outfielder. Gaber played in 35 games, starting all of them. She batted .279 with 15 runs, 24 hits, eight RBI and one stolen base. She owned a .279 slugging percentage, a .344 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

As a sophomore in 2002, Gaber was named Second Team All-Little East Conference as an outfielder. Gaber played in 37 games, starting all of them. She batted .226 with 12 runs, 21 hits, eight RBI and one stolen base. She owned a .226 slugging percentage, a .265 on-base percentage and a .861 fielding percentage.

As a freshman in 2001, she played in 39 games, starting 36 of them. She batted .188 with 19 hits, ten RBI, eight runs, two doubles and four stolen bases. She owned a .208 slugging percentage, a .224 on-base percentage and a .941 fielding percentage.

Gaber is a communications major and a 2000 graduate of Bacon Academy.

Senior Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) closed out her career as Rhode Island College’s finest pitcher ever. She appeared in 109 games, starting 92 of them. She posted a 53-37 record with a 1.59 earned run average and 629 strikeouts in 632.0 innings pitched. She logged 77 complete games and 17 shutouts. She is RIC’s all-time leader in games started, wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. She is tied for the all-time lead in shutouts. She is second in both complete games and relief appearances and is third in career ERA.

As a hitter, Warrington played in 134 games, starting 124 of them. She batted .281 with 381 at bats, 107 hits, 56 runs, 26 doubles, 11 triples, three home runs, 26 walks and 62 RBI. She owned a .430 career slugging percentage and a .329 on-base percentage. She is second all-time at RIC in triples, third in RBI, fourth in total bases and is fifth in hits.

As a senior in 2004, Warrington was named Second Team All-Little East Conference as a pitcher for the fourth consecutive season and was also selected as the team’s MVP. She appeared in 27 games, starting 19 of them. She owned an 11-8 record with a 2.01 ERA. In 143.0 innings pitched, she struck out a team-high 175 batters. At the plate, she played in 28 games, starting 24 of them. She batted .288 with 21 hits, four doubles, two home runs, seven walks, six runs and 11 RBI. Warrington owned a .425 slugging percentage, a .350 on-base percentage and a .925 fielding percentage.

As a junior in 2003, she was named Second Team All-Little East as a pitcher. Warrington appeared in 29 games, starting 26 of them. She was 15-11 with a 1.94 ERA, 22 complete games, three shutouts and 172 strikeouts in 176.2 innings. As a hitter, she played in 32 games, starting all of them. She batted .253 with 13 runs, 24 hits, four doubles, three triples and 16 RBI. She owned a .358 slugging percentage, a .317 on-base percentage and a .917 fielding percentage.

As a sophomore in 2002, she was named First Team All-Little East Conference as a designated player and Second Team All-LEC as a pitcher. Warrington appeared in 28 games, starting 25 of them. She was 16-9 with a 0.98 ERA, 23 complete games, seven shutouts, and 146 strikeouts in 171.2 innings. As a DP, she played in 33 games, starting 29 of them. She batted .189 with nine runs, 17 hits, three doubles, four triples, 12 RBI and two stolen bases. She owned a .311 slugging percentage, a .229 on-base percentage and a .962 fielding percentage.

As a freshman in 2001, Warrington was named First Team All-ECAC and All-Little East Conference as a designated player and Second Team All-Little East Conference as a pitcher. Warrington was named RIC's MVP and to the LEC All-Tournament Team. She appeared in 25 games, starting 22 of them. She was 11-9 with a 1.49 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 140.2 innings. She posted three shutouts on the year. When not pitching, Warrington assumed the designated player role. She played in 41 games, starting 39 of them. She batted .366 with 45 hits, 23 RBI, 29 runs, 15 doubles, four triples, one home run and four stolen bases. She owned a .577 slugging percentage, a .400 on-base percentage and a .967 fielding percentage.

Warrington is an elementary education major with a concentration in special education and a 2000 graduate of North Kingstown High School.

Junior catcher Rachael Caldwell (Richmond, RI) played in 36 games, starting all of them. She batted .267 with 28 hits, three doubles, nine walks, 15 runs scored and eight RBI. Caldwell owned a .295 slugging percentage, a .336 on-base percentage and a .982 fielding percentage.

Junior third baseman Amy Machado (Newport, RI) played in 37 games, starting all of them. She batted .291 with 34 hits, five doubles, five walks, ten runs scored and 12 RBI. Machado owned a .333 slugging percentage, a .325 on-base percentage and a .859 fielding percentage.

Sophomore outfielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) played in 13 games, starting ten of them. She owned a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Sophomore outfielder Megan Ponte (Wakefield, RI) was named First Team All-Little East Conference as an outfielder. Ponte played in 37 games, starting 36 of them. She batted .299 with 35 hits, three doubles, a team-high three triples, ten walks, 21 runs scored and 12 RBI. Ponte owned a .376 slugging percentage, a .354 on-base percentage and a .895 fielding percentage.

Sophomore infielder Alyssa Severino (Taunton, MA) played in six games, starting all of them, before a shoulder injury ended her season. She batted .167 with one hit. Severino owned a .167 slugging percentage, a .167 on-base percentage and a .857 fielding percentage.

Sophomore outfielder Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) played in 16 games, starting five of them. She batted .143 with two hits and three runs scored. Sitnik owned a .143 slugging percentage, a .143 on-base percentage and a 1.000 fielding percentage.

Freshman Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA) was named the Little East Conference’s Rookie of the Year and also earned First Team All-Little East honors as a designated player. Alexander played in 37 games, starting all of them. She batted .345 with a team-high 41 hits, five doubles and 20 RBI. Alexander also had eight walks, 12 runs scored, a .387 slugging percentage, a .380 on-base percentage and a .962 fielding percentage.

Freshman infielder Katelyn Labelle (South Dartmouth, MA) played in 37 games, starting all of them. She batted .177 with 14 hits, two doubles, ten walks, eight runs scored and nine RBI. Labelle owned a .203 slugging percentage, a .270 on-base percentage and a .962 fielding percentage.

Freshman second baseman Casie Lyons (Hudson, MA) played in 34 games, starting 31 of them. She batted .271 with 23 hits, one double, one triple, two walks, ten runs scored and 12 RBI. Lyons owned a .306 slugging percentage, a .284 on-base percentage and a .962 fielding percentage.

Freshman shortstop Crystal O’Connell (Somerset, MA) played in 30 games, starting all of them. She batted .200 with nine hits, two doubles, three walks, eight runs scored and three RBI. O'Connell owned a .244 slugging percentage, a .250 on-base percentage and a .935 fielding percentage.

Freshman pitcher/designated player Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) appeared in 20 games, starting 18 of them. She owned a 10-7 record with a 2.01 ERA. In 104.2 innings pitched, she struck out 94 batters. As a hitter, Riley played in 26 games, starting 24 of them. She batted .354 with 23 hits, three doubles, one triple, five walks, five runs scored and ten RBI. Riley owned a .431 slugging percentage, a .400 on-base percentage and a .903 fielding percentage.
