DURGIN'S FREE THROWS CLINCH RIC VICTORY
|
|
Providence, RI—Freshman
guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood,
ME) hit two crucial free
throws with two seconds left in the game to clinch a, 68-64, victory
for Rhode Island College over in-state rival Salve Regina University.
RIC had led by as much as eight down the stretch, but the Seahawks had
cut lead to two prior to fouling Durgin and sending him to the charity
stripe. |

RIC junior forward Jason Harris (Bedford,
MA) led the Anchormen with
18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Brian
Stanko (Swansea, MA)
had 14 points and four assists. Harris and Stanko were the Seahawks
nemesis all night, as the pair combined to shoot 8-12 from three-point
land. In addition to his free throw performance, Durgin also chipped
in with ten points, three assists and two steals. |

Salve Regina came up with a valiant
effort in the second half, but came up short as time expired. Senior
forward Greg Kuwula (Ridgewood, NJ) was nearly unstoppable in
the post with a game-high 19 points and 15 boards. Sophomore guard
Matt Smolensky (New York, NY) and freshman forward Matt Grendal
(Foxboro, MA) also scored in double figures for the Seahawks with
12 and ten points, respectively. |

The win snapped a three-game losing
streak for RIC versus Salve Regina. Prior to tonight's victory, the
Anchormen had not defeated the Seahawks since the 2000-01 season. The
win was also RIC's third straight victory at The Murray Center this
winter. |
