2003-04 Wrestling Season Summary

(16-8 Overall; 11-5 in the NECCWA; 6-0 in the Pilgrim League) |

Coach Jay Jones’ team closed out the 2003-04 season with a
seventh-place tie (15 teams), and had four grapplers earn All-New
England honors, at the 2004 New England College Conference Wrestling
Association (NECCWA) Championships, hosted by WPI, on Saturday and
Sunday, Feb. 21-22. |

|
The Rhode Island College wrestling team posted a 16-8 overall record
and was 11-5 in the NECCWA. RIC captured its second consecutive
Pilgrim Wrestling League title, posting a perfect 6-0 mark on the
season. The Anchormen went undefeated with a 6-0 record in 2002-03 as
well. RIC has won 13 consecutive Pilgrim League matches. |

|
In addition, RIC's 16 regular season victories are the most since the
1991-92 team won 18 and the Anchormen established a new school record
with a team total of 69 pins, 19 more than 2001-02 squad. |

|
|
Junior Justin Deveau (North
Attleboro, MA)
was selected as one of two N.E. Wild-Cards to compete at the NCAA Div.
III Championships, which were hosted by Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa
on Mar. 6-7. Deveau went 1-2 at the NCAA Championships. Both of his
losses were to eventual All-Americans. |

Deveau earned All-New England honors, placing second at 285 lbs. at
the NECCWA Championships. Deveau has earned All-New England honors in
each of his three seasons as an Anchorman. He was 39-6 at 285 lbs.
with 161 points, 57 takedowns, ten reversals, 42 escapes, 15
near-falls and five pins. |

Freshman Olutosin Taylor (Copiague,
NY)
earned All-New England honors, placing fourth at 197 lbs. Taylor went
4-2 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 14-8 at 197
lbs. with 69 points, 42 takedowns, seven reversals, 23 escapes, ten
near-falls and six pins. |

Freshman Mike Bonora (Nutley,
NJ)
earned All-New England honors, placing fifth at 141 lbs. Bonora went
3-2 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 22-9 at 141
lbs. with 82 points, 100 takedowns, 12 reversals, 42 escapes, 12
near-falls and two pins. |

Junior Keith Nelson (Rhinebeck,
NY)
earned All-New England honors, placing sixth at 174 lbs. Nelson went
3-3 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 36-16 at 174
lbs. with 142 points, 80 takedowns, six reversals, 57 escapes, 22
near-falls and nine pins. |

|
RIC will only lose one senior this season. Senior Giovanni Calise (Cranston,
RI)
was 2-5 at 197 lbs. with 12 points, one takedown, one reversal and two
pins on the season. As a junior in 2002-03, Calise
was 1-1 at
285 lbs. with six points. He is a communications/film study major and
a 1998 graduate of Cranston High School West. |

Junior Luke Emmons (West
Greenwich, RI)
went 2-2 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 18-17 at
149 lbs. with 76 points, 40 takedowns, 15 reversals, 39 escapes, 21
near-falls and four pins. |
|
|
|
Junior Dan Fortner (Mystic, CT) was 3-8 at 157 lbs. with nine
points, eight takedowns, 18 escapes and two near-falls. |
|
|
|
Junior Eddy German (Providence,
RI)
was 5-7 at 125 lbs. With 16 points, 23 takedowns, four reversals, 12
escapes and one near-fall. |
|
|
|
Junior Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) was 7-10 at 149 lbs. with 37
points, six takedowns, one reversal, 14 escapes and four near-falls
and four pins. |
|
|
|
Junior Ryan Klupt (Miller
Place, NY)
was 5-28 at 184 lbs. with 21 points, 14 takedowns, six reversals and
33 escapes. |
|
|
|
Junior Andre LaBonte (Harrisville,
RI)
was 3-3 at 285 lbs. with 12 points, three takedowns, seven escapes and
one pin. |
|
|
|
Junior Dave Paquette (Ledyard,
CT)
went 2-2 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 12-10 at
157 lbs. with 53 points, 34 takedowns, nine reversals, 25 escapes,
seven near-falls and four pins. |
|
|
|
Junior Allyn Quibble (Ledyard,
CT)
was 8-9 at 149 lbs. with 42 points, 25 takedowns, five reversals, 12
escapes, eight near-falls and five pins. |
|
|
|
Sophomore B.J. Atkinson (Danbury,
CT)
was 0-2 at 285 lbs. |
|
|
|
Sophomore Todd Bloom (Wantagh,
NY)
went 2-2 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 25-16 at
133 lbs. with 113 points, 61 takedowns, 11 reversals, 34 escapes, 20
near-falls and seven pins. |

|
|
Sophomore Richard Chute (Wrentham,
MA)
was 8-9 at 141 lbs. with 37 points, 17 takedowns, five reversals, 27
escapes, five near-falls and one pin. |
|
|
|
Sophomore Dan Nelson (Uncasville,
CT)
was 0-2 at 133 lbs. with one reversal. |
|
|
|
Sophomore Arty Privedenyuk (Springfield,
MA)
went 1-2 at the NECCWA Championships. For the season, he was 20-18 at
165 lbs. with 78 points, 33 takedowns, 21 reversals, 34 escapes, 20
near-falls and five pins. |

Freshman Ricky Boyle (North
Attleboro, MA)
was 0-8 at 165 lbs. with three takedowns and 19 escapes. |

Freshman Ian Coyne (Amston,

was 12-11 at 157 lbs. with 39 points, 20 takedowns, six reversals, 43
escapes and one near-fall. |
