2003-04 Rhode Island College
Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Summary

Providence, RI--Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s team closed out the 2003-04 season at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College, on Mar. 5-6. The Anchormen finished tied for 33rd (36 teams) with 2.0 points.

 

The Anchormen competed at the New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College, on Feb. 20-21. RIC tied for 15th place (21 teams) with 13.0 points.

 

RIC competed at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships, hosted by Southern Maine, on Feb. 14. RIC placed second overall and third in the Little East with scores of 99.0 and 102.0, respectively.

 

As a team, the Anchormen broke ten school records this winter.

 

Senior Mike Basilico (Johnston, RI) placed 11th in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 9:38.97 at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He finished 14th in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:11.43 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:52.38 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Basilico placed 37th in the 1,500 meters with a season-best time of 4:32.94 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He finished eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:55.31 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed 11th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:58.46 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

As a junior in 2002-03, Basilico placed 27th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:54.60 at the Alliance Championships. He placed fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:14.23 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

 

Basilico is a communications major and a 1999 graduate of Johnston High School. Prior to transferring into RIC, Basilico attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

 

Senior Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) leaves RIC holding school records in the 600, 1,000, 1,500, and 3,000 meters. He is also a member of the RIC record-holding 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay squad.

 

As a senior in 2003-04, Rudd placed 13th in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.71 at the ECAC Div. III Championships on Mar. 6. Rudd ran a season-best time of 1:54.50 in the 800 meters at the New England Open Championships on Feb. 28. He earned All-New England honors in two events at the N.E. Championships on Feb. 21. Rudd placed seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.47 and eighth as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a school-record time of 3:28.14. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in four events at the Alliance/Little East Championships on Feb. 14. Rudd placed second in the 600 meters with a school-record time of 1:24.52, second in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:36.77 and first in both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay with times of 3:32.97 and a school record 8:27.78, respectively.

 

He finished fifth in the mile with a season-best time of 4:26.60 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed first in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:36.67 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

As a junior in 2002-03, Rudd placed 12th as part of the distance medley relay team with a time of 10:24.19 at the ECAC Championships, establishing a new RIC record in the process. He earned All-New England honors in the 1,000 meters, placing eighth with a time of 2:34.85. Rudd also earned All-New England honors as part of the distance medley relay team, which placed second with a time of 10:30.54.

 

Rudd earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 600 and 1,000 meters. He placed third in the 600 meters with a time of 1:25.65. He placed fourth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:35.79.

 

He placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.37 at the Southern Maine Invitational. Rudd placed ninth in the mile with a time of 4:29.18 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. He placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.04 at the Yale Invitational. Rudd placed third in the mile with a time of 4:30.15 at the Harvard Invitational. He placed fourth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:39.23 at the Brown Invitational.

 

As a sophomore in 2001-02, Rudd placed ninth at the ECAC Championships with a time of 4:02.44 in the 1,500 meters. Rudd earned All-New England honors as part of the distance medley team, which placed sixth with a time of 10:44.84 at the N.E. Div. III Championships.

 

Rudd earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in both the 1,000 and 1,500 meters. He placed first in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:34.43 and second in the 1,500 meters, which established a new school record with a time of 4:02.01.

 

At the Wheaton Invitational, Rudd placed second in the 1,000 meters setting a new school record with time of 2:32.22. Rudd logged a time of 1:58.00 in the 800 meters at the Harvard Invitational. Rudd placed second at the Brown Invitational in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:03.44, setting another school record. At the Southern Maine Invitational, Rudd placed first overall in the mile with a time of 4:27.88.

 

As a freshman in 2000-01 Rudd earned All-ECAC honors in the 1,000 meters, placing seventh overall with a time of 2:34.50 at the Div. III ECAC Championships on Mar. 3. Rudd placed 10th at the New England Championships with a time of 2:36.63. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 1,000 meters, placing second overall with a time of 2:35.19 at the Alliance Championships. Rudd placed first overall in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:36.24 at the Southern Maine Invitational. He placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.98 at the Smith College Invitational.

 

Rudd is a political science major and a 1999 graduate of Pilgrim High School.

 

Junior Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) missed the majority of the season with a knee injury. He finished seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.27 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed fourth in the mile with a time of 4:32.22 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

                                                                                                                                                                                             

Junior Marc Piette (Woonsocket, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the weight throw, placing second with a season-best distance of 49'02.75", at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He also placed tenth in the shot at 38'04.25". He finished 28th in the shot with a distance of 37’00.25” and sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 46’02.00” at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7.

 

He placed sixth in the shot and seventh in the weight throw with a season-best distance of 39'09.00" and 44'08.00", respectively at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. He finished fifth in shot with a distance of 37’03.75” and second in the weight throw with a distance of 45’10.00” at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 41’06.50” at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 46’00.50” at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Junior Josh Precourt (Woonsocket, RI) earned All-New England honors in one event at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21. Precourt placed eighth as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a school-record time of 3:28.14. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events at the Alliance/Little East Championships on Feb. 14. He placed seventh in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 54.18 and first as part of the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:32.97. He also placed 12th in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.47.

 

He finished 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 54.71 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed eighth in the 200 meters and fifth in the 400 meters with times of 25.11 and 54.20, respectively at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Precourt placed 16th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.68 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He finished seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 24.73 and ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 55:26 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed 24th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.77 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished 19th in the 400 meters with a time of 55.28 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.81 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Sophomore Manny Karngar (Providence, RI) earned All-ECAC honors in the 800 meters, placing seventh with a time of 1:57.48, at the ECAC Div. III Championships on Mar. 6. Karngar earned All-New England honors in two events at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21. Karngar placed second in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:54.50 and eighth as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a school-record time of 3:28.14. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in four events at the Alliance/Little East Championships on Feb. 14. Karngar placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.27, first in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 50.35, first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.22 and first as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a time of 3:32.97.

 

He finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.92 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.99 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Karngar placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.31 and second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.37 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He broke two school-records by finishing first in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 23.14 and first in the 500 meters with a season-best time of 1:05.53 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17.

 

Sophomore Nick Palazzo (Providence, RI) placed 21st in the weight throw with a distance of 12.28 meters at the N.E. Division III Championships on Feb 21. He finished 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 42’09.50” at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 43'11.75" at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Palazzo finished 11th in the weight throw with a distance of 13.28 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan, 24. He placed third in the weight throw with a season-best distance of 44’11.50” at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 13.15 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 43’07.75” at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Sophomore Richard Palazzo (Providence, RI) placed ninth in the weight throw with a season-best distance of 41'08.00" at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championship on Feb. 14. He placed 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 38'08.75" at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Palazzo placed 17th in the weight throw with a distance of 11.97 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24.  He finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 41’01.00” at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed 14th in the weight throw with a distance of 37’09.50” at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 34’05.00” at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman Tim Goodwin (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4x800 meter relay team, which placed first with a school-record time of 8:27.78 at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He finished 16th in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:44.65 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed third in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 9:26.06 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Goodwin finished 32nd in the 1,500 meters with a season-best time of 4:28.51 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He placed sixth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:48.43 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished 11th in the mile with a season-best time of 4:44.56 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:43.03 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman Matt Goroza (West Warwick, RI) placed 26th in the 55 meters with a time of 7.37, 32nd in the 200 meters with a time of 25.70 and 18th in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 56.65 at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championship on Feb. 14. He finished 43rd in the 200 meters with a time of 25.48 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed ninth in the preliminary round of the 55 meters with a season-best time 7.29, 14th in the 200 meters and 13th in the 400 meters with times of 26.00, and 57.66, respectively at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Goroza finished 40th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.77 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He placed 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.80 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished 37th in the prelims of the 55 meters with a time of 7.36 and 41st in the 400 meters with a time of 59.29 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed 32nd in the 60 meters with a school-record time of 7.64 and 29th in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 25.47 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13.

 

Freshman Eric Lonergan (North Kingstown, RI) placed 16th in the mile with a time of 4:41.55 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished tenth in the mile with a season-best time of 4:39.81 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed seventh in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 9:36.62 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman Jam Luong (Millbury, MA) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the triple jump, placing sixth with a school-record leap of 40'10.50" at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He also placed 12th in the long jump with a season-best distance of 19'02.75". He finished tenth in the triple jump with a distance of 39’05.75” at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed seventh in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump with leaps of 18'07.25" and 38'02.50", respectively at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. He finished third in the long jump with a distance of 18’09.75” and third in the triple jump with a distance of 39’03.25” at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed 15th in the long jump with a distance of 17’10.75” at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished 28th in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 57.13 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed ninth in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 26.14 and sixth in the long jump with a mark of 17’07.00” at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman John Martinelli (North Providence, RI) earned All-New England honors in one event at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21. Martinelli placed eighth as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a school-record time of 3:28.14. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He placed eighth in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 54.26 and first as part of the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:32.97. He also placed 21st in the 55 meters with a season-best time of 7.12 and 18th in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.64. He placed 18th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.32 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He finished 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 55.51 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He placed 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.28 and 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 56.08 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished 33rd in the prelims of the 55 meters with a time of 7.17 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed 16th in the 60 meters with a school-record time of 7.60 and 16th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.59 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13.

 

Freshman Chris Matteson (Wood River Junction, RI) placed tenth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.96 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Matteson tied for 19th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.87 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He finished first in the 55 meter hurdles with a school-record time of 8.67 and tenth in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.91 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed 16th in the preliminary round of the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.96 and 40th in the 400 meters with a time of 58.44 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished eighth in the 60 meter hurdles with a school-record time of 9.49 and 27th in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 57.06 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed eighth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.06 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman Andy Neil (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He placed fifth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:05.35 and first as part of the 4x800 meter relay with a school record time of 8:27.78. He finished 12th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.46 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed sixth in the 600 meters with a season-best time of 1:31.17 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Neil placed 22nd in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.78 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He finished fourth in the 500 meters with a season-best time of 1:12.17 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed 25th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.79 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.79. He placed second in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:47.46 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman Dan Newman (Smithfield, RI) earned All-New England honors in one event at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21, placing seventh in the high jump with a school-record height of 6'04.00". He finished third in the high jump with a mark of 6’01.25” at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed second in the high jump with an effort of 6'02.00" at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Newman finished eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5’10.00” at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished sixth in the high jump with a mark of 6’01.25” at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed third in the high jump with mark of 6’02.00” at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

Freshman Javon Partin (Providence, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb.14. He placed fifth in the 600 meters with a season-best time of 1:28.19 and first as part of the 4x800 meter relay with a school-record time of 8:27.78. He finished 16th in the 600 meters with a time of 1:29.51 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed 17th in the 500 meters with a season-best time of 1:11.20 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan 24. He finished seventh in the 500 meters with a time of 1:14.71 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He placed 20th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.59 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished 11th in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:07.46 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. He placed third in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:47.46 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.
