Danbury’s B.J. Atkinson
Attends
NCAA Leadership Conference
Providence, RI--Rhode Island College junior wrestler B.J. Atkinson
(Danbury, CT) participated in the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference,
which was held May 29-June 2 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and
Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The
mission of the NCAA Leadership Conference is to develop a diverse group of
student-athletes who will actively participate in and experience a
multitude of challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable
them to become change agents on their campuses and in their communities.
It provides the NCAA student-athletes with the opportunity to discuss and
explore critical issues facing their peers; to enhance their leadership
skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes,
coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.
During
the 2004-05 season, Atkinson
earned All-New England honors at
285 lbs., placing fourth at the New England College Conference Wrestling
Association (NECCWA) Championships. He was 13-14 at 285 lbs. with 66
points, 24 takedowns, four near-falls and seven pins on the season. He
placed fifth at 285 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 13.
Participants engaged in a variety of developmental activities designed to
enhance their communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills
and will also participate in collaborative projects and critical thinking.
Student-athletes developed their leadership skills through interactive
hands-on work in small groups, and have the opportunity to reflect on
their experiences.
Participating student-athletes represented all NCAA Divisions, a variety
of different sports, both genders and different ethnicities.
Also nominated to attend this conference from RIC were sophomore men’s
basketball player John Weir (Danbury,
CT)
and
sophomore women’s volleyball player Kara Sarcione (Londonderry,
NH).
