Springfield College Women’s Volleyball Opens SC Invitational Season With Two Solid Victories

 

Pride Beat Suffolk 3-0 In Game One; Down RIC 3-0 In Friday Finale

 

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 2, 2005 – Springfield College junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) registered 28 digs in two games as the Pride defeated Suffolk University, 3-0 (30-19, 30-15, 30-14), and Rhode Island College, 3-0 (30-13, 30-14, 30-25), in the first day of action at the SC Invitational held in Blake Arena on Friday night, September 2nd.

 

In game one, the Pride were led by senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.), who recorded 14 kills against Suffolk.  The reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year, senior Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.), recorded team-highs in assists (36) and aces (four) to help lift SC over the Rams.

 

In game two, it was junior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) who led the way with 12 kills in the 3-0 win over RIC.  Hettrick compiled 15 digs against the Anchorwomen as the Pride scored nine unanswered points to win the match after being down 25-21 in game three.

 

In other SC Invitational action this evening, Roger Williams and Brandeis each picked up victories, as the Hawks defeated RIC, 3-1 (31-29, 27-30, 30-26, 30-18), and the Judges downed RWU, 3-1 (30-20, 22-30, 30-20, 30-26).

 

The Pride (2-0) will host two more games tomorrow as they face off with Roger Williams on Saturday morning, September 3rd at 10:00 a.m., and then meet up with Brandeis University for the finale at 3:00 p.m.
