GORHAM, Maine-- Senior
forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, R.I./Mt. Hope) scored the only
goal of the match in the eighth minute of play to give the visiting
Rhode Island College Anchormen a 1-0 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer match
played Sunday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field. |
|
The win lifts the
Anchormen to a 2-3-0 overall record. Southern Maine, winless in its
last four matches, falls to 1-3-1 overall. The match was the first of
the season in conference play for both teams. |
|
A foul outside the
penalty area gave the Anchormen a direct kick opportunity from about
25 yards out. Teixeira hit a curving ball into the upper corner of
the net for his sixth goal of the season. The Anchormen control much
of the play in the opening half, out-shooting the Huskies 10-2. |
|
Teixeira had the best
opportunity to score in the second half, but his hard, rising shot
from about 12 yards out deflected off USM goalkeeper Chris Willard's
(Hampton, Conn./Parish Hill) hand and ricocheted off the cross bar. |
|
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, R.I.) registered one save for the
Anchormen. Willard finished the match with three saves. The
Anchormen had a 13-4 advantage in shots and held an 8-1 margin in
corner kicks. |
|
Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College
on Tuesday for its next match. Rhode Island College travels to
Johnson and Wales University on Wednesday. |
