PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Chris Childs (Cranston,
R.I.) scored the game-tying goal with four minutes to play in
regulation and added the game-winner in the 108th minute Saturday
afternoon to pull out a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a
Little East Conference men’s soccer match at Panther Field.
The Anchormen improve their winning streak to six games and
improve to 8-4-2 and 4-0-1 in the LEC, while the Panthers fall to 9-3-3
overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.
The first half of play was scoreless as both teams
displayed solid defense. The Panthers had a golden opportunity in the
34th minute when freshman Gareth Stephens (Yeovil, England) hit a
cross to junior Dustin Moya (Thornton, Colo.) in the box,
but Moya’s shot sailed over the crossbar.
RIC nearly got on the board first just two minutes into the
second half as sophomore Kyle Genereux (Harrisville, R.I.) received
a pass from Matt Borges (New Bedford, Mass.) but his shot hit the
side of the net. The Panthers broke the scoreless dual two minutes later
when sophomore Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.) slammed the
ball in the back of the net after scrum in front of the RIC net.
It looked like the Panthers were going to pull off the
victory until Childs sent the game into overtime with his first of two
goals of the match. They were Childs’ first two goals of the season.
RIC finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots. PSU keeper
Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) recorded two saves, while RIC
netminder Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, Mass.) did not register a save.
The Panthers play their final regular season home game
Thursday as they host Thomas College at 6:30 p.m. The Anchormen are back
in action Monday when Connecticut College visits (3:30 p.m.)
