RIC WINS ON PENALTY KICKS
Anchormen to host LEC
Championship Game for First Time Ever

Providence, RI—Second-seeded
Rhode Island College advanced in the 2005 Little East Conference Men’s
Soccer Tournament by winning on penalty kicks over third-seeded
Plymouth State University. The Anchormen will host fourth-seeded
Western Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Championship Game at
noon. This will be the first time the Anchormen will host the
Championship Game of the LEC Men’s Soccer Tournament. |

The two
teams battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime
periods. The game ended in a tie and penalty kicks were needed to
determine which squad advanced. The Anchormen scored on each of their
five attempts, while Plymouth scored on three of four. RIC sophomore
goalkeeper Sean Gonsalves’ (Somerset, MA) diving save on PSU
senior midfielder Brad Wyman’s (Durham, NH) attempt was the
difference. |

RIC scored
on penalty kicks by freshman Josh Silva (Dartmouth, MA),
junior Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI), freshman
Tyrell Burgess (Smiths, Bermuda), senior Kyle Teixeira (Warren,
RI), while sophomore Kyle Genereux’s (Harrisville, RI) goal
sealed the win. |

PSU scored
on its first, third and fourth attempts, with goals by freshman
Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, NH), sophomore Takeru
Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan) and senior Chris Catatao
(Burlington, MA). |

|
|
During
regulation, Genereux gave RIC the early lead, scoring on a pass from
Teixeira in the 21st minute. PSU senior Steve Libera
(Cromwell, CT) tied the game in the 55th minute on a
pass from freshman Gareth Stevens (Yeovil, England).

|
|
Gonsalves
made two saves to stay unbeaten with a 4-0-3 record on the season.
Plymouth State freshman goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, NH)
did not make a save as his record is now 10-3-4. |

|
The game
goes down as a tie, with RIC’s record going to 9-5-4, while PSU is now
11-3-4. |
