Anchormen Advance to Semi-Finals

Rhode Island College scored in the fourth minute and never looked back
en route to a 4-0 win over seventh-seeded Castleton State in first
round action of the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
New England Div. III Men’s Soccer Tournament. |

Senior
forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren,
RI)
had a goal and two assists for four points to lead the Anchormen
offensively. Sophomore forward Kyle Genereux (Harrisville,
RI)
put RIC on top in the fourth minute, scoring on a pass from Teixeira.
Junior midfielder Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket,
RI)
netted a goal in the 29th minute to put RIC up, 2-0. Senior
sweeper Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) scored on a penalty kick
in the 39th minute and Teixeira scored in the 40th
minute with a diving head shot off of sophomore midfielder Julian
Montoya’s (North Providence, RI) crossing pass to round out RIC’s
scoring. |

The
Anchormen held the Spartans without a shot for the entire 90 minutes,
outshooting CSC, 20-0. RIC sophomore goalkeeper Jadon Neves
(Warren, RI) did not have to make a save to earn his fourth
shutout of the season. Neves is now 6-5-1 on the season. As a team,
RIC has held its opponents scoreless in ten of its 20 games this fall. |

Castleton
State senior goalkeeper Matt Vernon (Allentown, NJ) took the
loss, making four saves and allowing all four goals in the first half,
as his record falls to 4-3. Junior goalkeeper Dan Gregory (New
Paltz, NY) relieved Vernon after the first half, making three
stops in the final 45 minutes of action. |

RIC
improves to 10-5-5 and advances to the semi-finals. The Anchormen will
host third-seeded Plymouth State, which defeated sixth-seeded Albertus
Magnus, 4-0, on Saturday, Nov. 12. The game is scheduled to start
at 11 a.m. Castleton State ends its season with a 9-8-1 record. |
