Anchormen Head to Their First-Ever ECAC Championship Game

Providence, RI—Second-seeded
Rhode Island College defeated third-seeded Plymouth State University
in semi-final action of the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
New England Div. III Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Anchormen head to
the tourney’s Championship Game where they will face top-seeded Clark
University on Sunday, Nov. 13. It is the first time in the program’s
history that RIC has advanced to the ECAC title contest. |

The
Anchormen got on the board in the 37th minute when junior
forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) was fouled and RIC was
awarded a penalty kick. Senior forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI)
took the penalty kick and scored his 19th goal of the
season. |

|
|
Giraldo
scored his fourth goal of the season in the 64th minute,
scoring on a bang-bang play when junior midfielder Nic Rossi (North
Kingstown, RI) fired a pass to senior midfielder Matt Borges
(New Bedford, MA) at the top of the penalty box. Borges one-timed
the pass to Giraldo who found the back of the net from 25 yards out. |

Senior
forward Chris Childs (Cranston, RI) scored his third goal of
the season in the 80th minute, stealing the ball away from
PSU freshman goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, NH) and
shooting it into the open net. |

|
|
The Panthers
finally scored in the 86th minute when senior back Steve
Libera (Cromwell, CT) tipped a freshman forward Gareth Stevens
(Yeovil, England) shot past RIC sophomore goalkeeper Jadon
Neves (Warren, RI). It was Libera’s third goal of the season. |
|
|
|
Neves made
six saves to improve his record to 7-5-1 on the season. Shute made
five stops as his record dips to 11-4-4. |
|
|
|
Prior to the
start of the 2004 season, RIC was 0-21-2 against Plymouth State. Since
then, the Anchormen are 4-0-1 against the Panthers. |
