Bilek & Lyons Notch Three Hits; Riley Shuts Down Corsairs

Providence, RI—Top-seeded
Rhode Island College defeated sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth, 7-1, in
the opening game of the 2006 Little East Conference Softball
Tournament. |

RIC got on the board early with two
runs in the bottom of the first. Anchorwoman junior catcher Kristyn
Alexander (East Wareham,
MA) and sophomore third
baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg,
MA) each drove in runs with
a pair of RBI singles. The Corsairs answered back in the top of the
second inning as junior first baseman Shannon Allberry (Attleboro,
MA) led off with a homer,
cutting the RIC lead to one, 2-1. |

The Anchorwomen extended their lead to
4-1 in the bottom of the third inning as senior center fielder
Megan Ponte (Wakefield,
RI) tripled home freshman
designated player Justine Burgess (Uxbridge,
MA), who had walked, and
junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North
Providence, RI) singled
Ponte home. On the mound, Riley kept the Corsairs at bay, closing out
the game allowing just one run on six hits. Riley struck out seven en
route to her 21st (21-2) win of the season. |

Rhode Island College senior second
baseman Casie Lyons (Hudson,
MA) and Bilek each recorded
three hits. The Anchorwomen pounded out 16 hits against two UMass
Dartmouth pitchers. Freshman Brittany Kannan (Methuen,
MA) started the game, going
just one inning and giving up two runs on five hits to take the loss
(8-8). Freshman Amie Nickerson (Wrentham,
MA) relieved Kannan in the
second inning and gave up five runs on 11 hits in five innings of
work. |

With the win, Rhode Island College
improves to 30-8-1 overall and advances to play fourth-seeded Western
Connecticut tomorrow at 10 a.m. UMass Dartmouth falls to 14-12-1
overall and will play at 4 p.m. this afternoon against second-seeded
Eastern Connecticut. |
