Nickerson Leads Corsairs Past
Warriors, 1-0
Eastern Connecticut’s Savelle is the hard-luck loser
Providence, RI—Sixth-seeded
UMass Dartmouth eliminated second-seeded Eastern Connecticut, 1-0,
from the 2006 Little East Conference Softball Tournament. |
It was a pitcher’s duel as UMass
Dartmouth freshman Amie Nickerson (Wrentham,
MA) and Eastern Connecticut
senior Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire,
CT) each threw five innings
of scoreless ball. |
UMD freshman first baseman
Christine White (Worcester,
MA) led off the bottom of
the sixth with a single to left field. Senior second baseman Amanda
Leal (New Bedford, MA)
sacrificed her to second. Freshman shortstop Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers,
MA) grounded to shortstop
and reached on Eastern Connecticut sophomore Casey Mahoney’s (Willimantic,
CT) throwing error, which
plated White for the game’s only run. |
Nickerson earned her seventh win of
the season (7-3), striking out six to earn her first collegiate
shutout. Savelle threw six innings, striking out five, in the loss
(12-10). Savelle, who lost, 2-0, to fifth-seeded Southern Maine
earlier in the day, did not allow an earned run in the tournament. |
The Corsairs will play at either 2
p.m. or 4 p.m. tomorrow against an opponent to be named later. |
