ANCHORWOMEN ADVANCE TO TITLE GAME
IN, 5-2, WIN
Six Errors Plague Huskies
|
|
Providence, RI—Top-seeded Rhode Island
College remained undefeated in 2006 Little East Conference Softball
Tournament play as the Anchorwomen downed fifth-seeded Southern Maine,
5-2. The Huskies will play an elimination game with sixth-seeded UMass
Dartmouth tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with the Anchorwomen set to play
the winner at noon. |
|
|
|
Rhode
Island College has won all three of its games in the tourney, having
downed UMass Dartmouth, 7-1, in opening round action yesterday
morning. The Anchorwomen, who have captured back-to-back Little East
Conference Regular Season Crowns, have never won the tournament nor
made it to the NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament. The winner of the
LEC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. |
|
|
|
The
Huskies, who had not allowed a run through 15 innings of tournament
play coming into the game, imploded defensively and made six errors,
including two dropped fly balls in the outfield. The Anchorwomen
capitalized on each mistake, plating five runs on seven hits, with
only one RBI. Southern Maine freshman starting pitcher
Bree Loon (Jay, ME) allowed
just one earned run to go along with seven strikeouts in a losing
(10-7) effort. |
|
|
|
The
Anchorwomen were led by junior starting pitcher
Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI),
who has not lost a game since Mar. 17, as she went the distance,
allowing just one earned run on six hits, while striking out eight, to
earn her 23rd (23-2) win of the year. |
|
|
|
Senior
left fielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton,
MA) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while
sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti
(Waterford, CT) went 2-for-3 with one RBI to
pace the Anchorwomen offense. |
