Huskies Eliminate Corsairs, 4-3
Mainville Remains Undefeated in LEC Tournament Play

Providence, RI—Fifth-seeded Southern Maine eliminated sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth from the 2006 Little East Conference Softball Tournament. The Huskies are 3-1 in the tournament, while the Corsairs bow out with a 2-2 mark.

Southern Maine freshman designated player Sabrina Mills (Westford, MA) led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and eventually scored on senior first baseman Caterina Riitano’s (Sangerville, ME) sacrifice fly to left field.

The Corsairs came back in the top of the second to tie the contest at 1-1. Freshman right fielder Meghan Mansor (Methuen, MA) reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a throwing error.

USM stormed right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame, scoring on Corsair errors. Junior catcher Danica Martin (Bridgton, ME) singled in the fourth inning, stole second, and eventually scored on sophomore third baseman Dawn Ross’s (Gray, ME) RBI single to build a 4-2 lead at the time.

UMass Dartmouth kept it close all game as freshman first baseman Christine White (Worcester, MA) singled and scored on a USM error in the top of the fourth, and then walked and scored on senior second baseman Amanda Leal’s (New Bedford, MA) triple in the sixth inning.

Southern Maine senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, ME) got White to pop out with two outs and runners on first and second in the seventh to secure her 11th (11-7) win of the season. Mainville went the distance, allowing one earned run on ten hits to go along with four strikeouts. UMass Dartmouth freshman pitcher Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA) took the loss (8-4), allowing two earned runs on 14 hits.

The Huskies, who face elimination with one loss, will play top-seeded Rhode Island College at noon.
