O’CONNORS HELPS ANCHORMEN BLITZ

24-Hit Barrage K.O.’s Bridgewater State

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College outscored Bridgewater State 20-0 from the third inning
on in a 22-4 rout of the Bears in collegiate baseball action. The
Anchormen scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and
never looked back, bashing Bears’ pitching for 24 hits in the win. RIC
improves to 8-11 and the squad’s 22 runs are the most in a game for
the club since the 2004 season. Bridgewater State falls to 7-10 with
the loss.

The Anchormen were led offensively by freshman left fielder
Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
who went 5-for-6 with five runs scored, four RBI, a solo homer and a
double. O’Connors, who was named the Little East Conference Baseball
Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week earlier today, came
up a triple short in his bid for the cycle. He is currently batting
.567 with a team-high 38 hits, nine doubles, three homers and 23 RBI.
He increased his hitting streak to 19 games in the win.

RIC freshman starting pitcher
Jake Dent (Somersworth, NH)
was touched up for nine hits and four runs in three innings of work.
Junior
Caleb Barber (Mystic, CT)
threw four innings of scoreless relief, allowing only four hits, to
earn the win (2-2). Freshman
Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI)
made his first collegiate appearance as a pitcher, throwing two
innings of scoreless relief, while notching three strikeouts, to close
out the game in the eighth and ninth.

Eleven different RIC players registered at least one hit in the
ballgame. Sophomore first baseman
Jim Connell (Smithfield, RI)
went 4-for-7 with two runs scored, three RBI and a double. Freshman
center fielder
Brian Burrows (Smithfield, RI)
went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, a double, two stolen
bases and two walks. Senior second baseman
Ray De La Cruz (Providence, RI)
went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and two walks.

Bridgewater State senior starting pitcher
Scott Favreau (Tewksbury, MA)
took the loss (1-4). The Bears used four relievers, but could not hold
back the Anchormen’s offensive onslaught. BSC pitchers also walked
nine batters, hit two players and threw five wild pitches.
Defensively, Bridgewater State made four errors.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Little East Conference rival UMass
Dartmouth on Thursday, Apr. 8 at 3:30 p.m.
