NAYLOR’S GAME-WINNING DOUBLE
SALVAGES DH FOR RIC
Anchormen and Hawks Trade Wins in Non-Conference Matchup
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College came from behind in its last at bat to defeat Roger
Williams, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader with in-state rival
Roger Williams on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks stormed back in game
two with a decisive, 11-3, win. RIC is now 11-14 overall, while RWU’s
record stands at 13-14.
|
|
The Anchormen trailed, 3-1, heading into their final at bat in the
bottom of the seventh inning in game one. Senior shortstop
Ray De La
Cruz (Providence, RI)
reached on an error and freshman pinch-hitter
Brian
Burrows (Smithfield, RI)
and junior catcher
Tim
Henault (East Greenwich, RI)
each singled to load the bases with no outs. RWU freshman pitcher
Brian Hurld (South Boston, MA)
struck out RIC freshman left fielder
Chris
O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
for the frame’s first out, which brought up junior right fielder
Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI).
Naylor hammered a fastball into the gap in right center field for a
bases-clearing double to lift the Anchormen to victory. Sophomore
reliever
Eric Fama
(Wappingers Falls, NY),
who came on in the seventh for freshman starter
Kyle Jones
(Middleboro, MA),
earned the win (1-1). Hurld took the loss (2-2).
|
|
The late-inning loss fired up RWU, who bashed RIC pitching for 16 hits
and 11 runs in a 11-3 game two victory. Hawks’ sophomore pitcher
Bobby Criscuolo (Branford, CT)
went the distance, allowing just three runs on nine hits, while
striking out three to earn the win (3-2). Roger Williams scored four
runs on RIC freshman starting pitcher
Jeff Costa
(Pawtucket, RI),
who took the loss (0-1) in the first few innings. The Hawks broke the
game open with five runs off of freshman reliever
Donovan
Rabbitt (Wood River Junction, RI)
in the fifth inning and added two more off of freshman
Jake Dent
(Somersworth, NH)
in the seventh. Senior shortstop
Kevin
Thompson (Southington, CT)
went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman center
fielder
Jamie
Dahill (South Boston, MA)
went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and clouted a solo homer
to lead off the first inning.

|
In other news, O’Connors recorded a hit in each game, notching at
least one hit in 24 of the 25 games he’s seen action in this spring
for the Anchormen. Naylor had a hit in each game and now has a
seven-game hitting streak. The doubleheader split for RIC was its
sixth of the season. It is the fourth time this spring the Anchormen
have won the first contest of a twinbill, only to drop game two.
|
|
In upcoming action, RIC will play a doubleheader at UMass Boston on
Saturday, Apr. 15 beginning at noon.
