ANCHORWOMEN TAKE TWO FROM COAST
GUARD
RIC Notches 20 Wins for the Eighth Consecutive Season
|
|
Providence,
RI—Rhode
Island College swept a doubleheader from Coast Guard in collegiate
softball action on Wednesday afternoon. RIC is unbeaten in its last
ten games and is now 20-7-1 on the season. The Anchorwomen have now
won 20 or more games in each of the last eight seasons. The Bears fall
to 17-17 in the loss. |
|
|
|
The
Anchorwomen scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning en
route to a 5-0 win in game one. Junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North
Providence, RI) cruised to her 14th win, firing a
three-hitter with five strikeouts. Senior right fielder Andree
Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) hit a bases loaded-clearing double in the
bottom of the first inning to give the Anchorwomen a lead they would
never relinquish. Coast Guard freshman pitcher Katie Murray
(Bloomfield Hills, MI) took the loss (3-5), allowing five runs
over six innings of work. |
|
|
|
Game two went
back and forth as RIC took an early, 2-0, lead after two innings. The
Bears came back with runs in the top of the third and sixth to tie the
contest. The game went into the eighth inning until RIC junior
designated player Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA) knocked
in the game-winning run with a shot down the left field line that
ricocheted off of Coast Guard sophomore third baseman Erin Cullen
(Dublin, OH) and plated sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti
(Waterford, CT). Riley came on in relief of freshman starting
pitcher Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) and earned her 15th
win (15-2). Alexander was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the win. Coast Guard
junior pitcher Colleen Perry (Norwalk, CT) went the distance
and took the loss (16-10). |
|
|
|
Riley, the
reigning Little East Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, has not
lost since Mar. 17, a span of 14 appearances. |
