Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College swept a doubleheader from Westfield State College in
collegiate softball action on Thursday afternoon. RIC took game one,
8-1, and then won game two, 9-0, in six innings. RIC, which has not
lost in its last 12 games, improves to 22-7-1 on the season. The Owls
fall to 9-19 this spring. |

RIC junior pitcher Nicole
Riley (North
Providence, RI) was
brilliant in game one, allowing just five hits and no earned runs, to
go along with eight strikeouts, in her 16th (16-2) win of
the year. Riley has not lost since Mar. 17, a string of 15
appearances. Sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford,
CT) went 4-for-4 with
two runs scored. The Anchorwomen did the majority of damage in the
bottom of the fifth when Riley and junior right fielder Andree
Sitnik (Lincoln,
RI) belted a pair of
two-RBI doubles. Junior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East
Wareham, MA) went
2-for-4 with one run scored and a pair of RBI singles. Junior
Katie Kissel (Monson,
MA) suffered her ninth
(5-9) loss of the season. Freshman right fielder Lindsay Jardin (Assonet,
MA) had two hits to
lead the Owls offensively. |

The Anchorwomen were more
dominant in game two as freshman pitcher Justine Burgess (Uxbridge,
MA) evened her record
at 5-5 with her second career shutout. RIC scored five runs in the
bottom of the first, highlighted by Sitnik’s two-RBI triple. RIC
needed just one run in the bottom of the sixth to win by the eight-run
mercy rule. Bilek singled and Sitnik blasted her first career homer
over the left field fence to win the game. She went 2-for-3 with two
runs scored, four RBI, a triple and a home run. Bilek also had a good
game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI and a homer.
Westfield State freshman pitcher Casey Riddell (Orange,
MA) was tagged for
nine hits and eight earned runs in her ninth (4-9) loss of the year.
