RILEY SETS RIC RECORD AS
ANCHORWOMEN SWEEP
Junior Pitcher Establishes New RIC Record For Single-Season Wins
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College has now won eight consecutive games and is unbeaten in
its last 16 contests as the Anchorwomen took two games from Little
East Conference rival Western Connecticut, 6-2 and 1-0, in collegiate
softball action on Tuesday afternoon. RIC is two wins shy of tying the
program record for wins (28) in a season with four regular season
games remaining on the schedule. |
|
|
|
In game one, the
Anchorwomen scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never
looked back on the way to a 6-2 victory. That would be all the run
support RIC junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI)
would need to record her 18th (18-2) win of the season.
Riley, who has not lost since Mar. 17 and is the reigning Little East
Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, threw a complete game,
allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out six. The 18 wins
is a new program record for victories in a season. Freshman designated
player Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) and Riley each had
two-RBI singles to pace the Anchorwomen’s offense. Burgess and
sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) each
recorded two hits in the win. Western Connecticut sophomore pitcher
Courtney Romyns (Newton, NJ) settled down after a rough first
frame, allowing six hits in a losing effort (6-3). |
|
|
|
Game two was a
tight affair as the two LEC rivals played scoreless softball up to the
fifth inning. RIC senior center fielder Megan Ponte (Wakefield,
RI) drew a walk and scored on senior second baseman Casie
Lyons’ (Hudson, MA) RBI double. Burgess scattered seven hits and
struck out three to earn her seventh win (7-5) and pick up her second
collegiate shutout. Western Connecticut sophomore pitcher Christina
Scordato (Hillsdale, NJ) took the loss (4-4). |

In upcoming
action, RIC will host LEC first place team Keene State on Thursday,
Apr. 27 at 3:30 p.m. |
