Providence, RI—Plymouth State senior Nick Gurney (Dixfield, ME) defeated Rhode Island College sophomore Kevin Davis (Amston, CT), 5-0, to snap a 21-21 deadlock and lift the Panthers to a 24-21 win over Rhode Island College in collegiate wrestling action. PSU improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association, while the loss drops RIC to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the NECCWA.

PSU won the first five bouts in the match including a surprise pin by junior Matt Friend (Jefferson, NH) over RIC senior Todd Bloom (Wantagh, NY) at 133 lbs. The Anchormen tried to mount a comeback on freshman Kurtis Strout’s (Columbus, CT), 9-2, win and junior Luis Feliz’s (Cranston, RI) pin, but Gurney stood tall for the Panthers in the decisive match.

In upcoming action, RIC and Plymouth State will compete at the R.I.T. Invitational on Dec. 3.
