Simpson
Defeats Williams 37-3 & Ithaca Defeats RIC 26-18
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA The Williams wrestling team fell to 3-4 on the year
with a 37-3 loss to perennial national power Simpson College. Williams is
now 0-9 all-time vs. the Simpson Storm. Simpson improved to 6-3 on the
year and ran their win streak to six.
Simpson's record entering the night's events of 4-3 was a little
misleading as they competed in the fall semester without their full lineup
and they had won their last four matches prior to heading east.
Dustin Brewer (141) is a two-time All-American having placed fourth last
year. Heavyweight Brett Christiansen also garnered All-America honors a
year ago for The Storm with a 6th place finish.
Simpson opened the match with seven wins in a row before sophomore Max
Pinto recorded a win for the Ephs at 184.
Sophomore Max Pinto was the lone Eph to record two wins on the night.
"It's always fun to win, but now I really appreciate all the hard work I
put in earlier in the season." said Pinto. "The beginning of January
is when the whole season really begins. These were two really good teams
we saw tonight, so I think we'll be fine the rest of the season."
"After a long break [not wrestling since Dec. 7th] I just wanted the guys
to come back and give it their all," said Eph head coach Raf Vega. "It was
nice to avenge last year's loss to RIC and it gave us some
momentum going into the Simpson match. We competed vs. Simpson, but I
thought once they won some early matches we lost our focus. The test for
us will be how we react tomorrow when we face a Simpson kid."
Simpson has appeared in 21 consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
The Ephs are hosting the Williamstown Invitational tomorrow beginning at
10:00 a.m. in Lasell Gym with Simpson, Ithaca, Roger Williams Univ.,
Johnson & Wales Univ. and Muhlenberg competing.
