College Men’s Basketball Update #1

(7-4 Overall; 2-1 in
the Little East Conference)

Coach Bob Walsh’s team is currently 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the
Little East Conference. The Anchormen are currently in a four-way tie
for second place in the Little East Conference. RIC shares the second
spot with UMass Boston, Plymouth State and Southern Maine. |

Anchormen Notables |
|
• RIC played its first game in 26 days on Thursday, Jan. 5 when the
Anchormen squared off against Bridgewater State. Despite leading by 17
points at the half, the Bears clawed their way back into the game and
won, 86-80. Sophomore guard Davon Yarbrough (New Haven, CT) led
all scorers with 21 points, including hitting four of six from
downtown. Junior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) registered
his first career double-double with an 18-point, 11-rebound effort. He
also had four assists and three steals in the game. In other action,
freshman guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) scored a
career-high 13 points and senior guard Kevin Payette (Woonsocket,
RI) grabbed ten boards. |

• The Anchormen played their first home game in exactly four weeks
when RIC squared off against Little East Conference rival Eastern
Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 7 and won, 76-58. RIC led by as many as
22 points in the first half, but the Warriors would not go away. ECSU
trimmed RIC’s lead to two points with 4:30 left in the game. RIC
freshman guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) nailed a three-point
basket 12 seconds later as part of a 18-2 Anchorman run over the next
four minutes to close out the game. Payette had 16 points, seven
rebounds, six assists and two steals in the win. Durgin scored a
team-high 17 points to go along with four assists, three rebounds and
three steals. Freshman forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT)
had nine points and eight boards. Hill, who had eight points, and
Stewart, who had four points, both played key roles in the win. |

• Durgin was named to the Little East Conference Men’s Basketball
Honor Roll after averaging
17.5 points,
7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in a 1-1 week. |
|
• Durgin, Payette and junior guard Kamari Williams (Springfield,
MA) are the team captains for the 2005-06 season. Williams
currently has 881 career points, needing just 119 to become the 26th
member of the RIC Men’s Basketball 1,000th Point Club. |
