Rhode Island College Wrestling Update #1

(5-7 Overall; 1-2 in the NECCWA; 0-0 in the Pilgrim League)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Jay Jones’ team is 5-7 overall, 1-2 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association and has yet to see action in the Pilgrim Wrestling League. RIC is currently ranked eighth in the latest NECCWA Coaches Poll.

Anchormen Notables

• The Anchormen returned from Lycoming College this weekend after five matches at the always tough Budd Whitehill Duals. RIC faced some of the top teams in the country and came back with a 3-2 record. After opening with a disappointing, 36-2, loss to Cortland, the Anchormen responded with a 26-16 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater. RIC lost a heartbreaker, 16-15, to Thiel to close out action on Friday, Jan. 13. The squad downed Case Western, 22-16, and Baldwin Wallace, 23-15, on Saturday, Jan. 14.

• Sophomore Mike Bonora (Nutley, NJ) is a new addition to the team this semester. Bonora competed for RIC in 2003-04, before transferring. He was 22-9 and earned All-New England honors at 141 lbs. that season. He went 3-0 at the Budd Whitehill Duals. Freshman Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) went 4-0 at 184 lbs. this past weekend, compiling ten takedowns and three reversals.

• In the latest NECCWA Individual Rankings, RIC freshman Kurtis Strout (Columbia, CT) is ranked fifth at 149 lbs., while senior Todd Bloom (Wantagh, NY) is ranked sixth at 133 lbs.

• RIC competed at a tri-match with Ithaca at Williams on Friday, Jan. 6. The Anchormen lost to NECCWA rival Williams, 23-12, and to the Bombers, 26-18. Junior Andrew Algarin (Leominster, MA) went 2-0 at 285 lbs. at the tri-meet.
