Wrestling Update #2

(8-9 Overall; 4-4 in the NECCWA;
0-0 in the Pilgrim League)

Coach Jay Jones’ team is 8-9 overall, 4-4 in the New England
College Conference Wrestling Association and has yet to see action in
the Pilgrim Wrestling League. RIC is currently ranked seventh in
the latest NECCWA Coaches Poll. |

Anchormen Notables |
|
• The
Anchormen went 2-2 at the New England Duals on Sunday, Jan. 22, which
placed them seventh out of a 15-team field. RIC opened with a 16-15
win over Wesleyan, then fell to Roger Williams, 30-6, and Bridgewater
State, 23-17, before downing Southern Maine, 30-13, to claim seventh
overall. |

• Sophomore
Mike Bonora (Nutley,
NJ)
has been on
fire since his return to the mat after nearly two years. Bonora, who
was an All-New England grappler in 2004, attended Hofstra last year
and did not wrestle. He transferred back to RIC this spring and has
not lost a match. He is 7-0 at 141 lbs. With 22 takedowns and one pin.
Bonora won all three of his matches at the New England Duals. Also
coming on strong is junior Luis Feliz (Cranston,
RI)
who is 9-3 at 157 lbs. with 16 takedowns and six pins. |

• RIC
defeated WPI, 24-20, in a battle of New England College Conference
Wrestling Association rivals on Jan. 17. WPI jumped out to a 7-0 lead
on wins before the Anchormen won the next five matches as part of a
24-0 run to seal the win. Bonora earned his fourth victory on the
season with a 5-3 win over junior Roman Walsh (Wilmington,
MA),
the sixth-ranked grappler in New England at 141 lbs. |
