Weir & Stanko Play Key Roles in Anchormen Win

            Providence, RI—Rhode Island College downed UMass Dartmouth, 70-61, in a battle of Little East Conference rivals on Tuesday night. It was the second consecutive conference win for the Anchormen, who improve to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in the LEC. The Corsairs fall to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

RIC junior center John Weir (Danbury, CT), who had a strong game with ten points and five rebounds, hit two free throws with 5:09 remaining to put the Anchormen up, 59-57, for good. Junior forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) had 11 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) led the Anchormen with 17 points, three boards, three assists and two steals.

UMass Dartmouth had two players post double-doubles, with junior forward Stephane Abelard (Brockton, MA) scoring a game-high 18 points to go along with ten boards, and junior forward Dan Holbrook’s (Lexington, MA) 12-point, ten-rebound effort.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Plymouth State on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. UMass Dartmouth will play at Lasell on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
