JWU Wrestling Captures
Pilgrim League Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team captured their fourth Pilgrim League Championship and second in two-years with a pair of victories against Coast Guard and Rhode Island College at the Harborside RAC on Wednesday evening.  The first match of the evening featured Coast Guard against Rhode Island College.  RIC posted a commanding 42-3 victory.  The Anchormen recorded four wins by pin fall in the victory. 

In the second match of the evening, JWU recorded three pins en route to a 38-6 win over Coast Guard.  JWU’s Brandon McDonough (Des Moines, Iowa) ranked No. 2 nationally, recorded a pin in a time of 2:20 at 125 pounds and No. 6 Matt Smith (Danville, N.H.) in 3:18 at 133 pounds.  Freshman William Esposito (Danbury, Conn.) picked up a win via pin fall in a time of 2:48 at 184 pounds for the Wildcats. JWU won nine of the ten matches in the contest.  In the final match of the evening, Johnson & Wales posted a 27-7 victory against intra-state rival Rhode Island College.  McDonough and Smith again won by pin fall as the Wildcats jumped out to the early 12-0 lead    JWU took seven of 10 matches, including a 16-4 major decision win by No. 5 Steve Martell (Caldwell, N.Y.) en route to the victory.

The Wildcats are now 17-7 on the season.  The team will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18th and Sunday, Feb. 19th when they travel to Wesleyan for the New England Collegiate Conference Wrestling Association Championship, starting at 9:00 a.m.
