2005-06 Men’s Basketball Season Summary

19-10 Overall; 9-5 (third
place) in the Little East Conference |
|
Providence, RI--Head
Coach Bob Walsh’s team finished the 2005-06 season with a 19-10
overall record and a 9-5 (third place) mark in the Little East
Conference. RIC’s season was ended with an 83-78 loss to Wheaton
College in the championship game of the 2006 ECAC Div. III New England
Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Anchormen also fell to Wheaton in the
finals of last season’s (2004-05) ECAC Tournament. |

Senior guard
Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) closed out his collegiate career
having played in 107 career games, starting 70 of them. His 107 career
games are tied for the most played in the program’s history. He
totaled 932 career points, 412 rebounds, 91 steals and 164 assists. He
averaged 8.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 1.5 assists per game
for his career. |

|
As a senior
in 2005-06, he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. He played in
29 games, starting all of them. He averaged 12.0 points, a team-high
6.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Payette registered
a career-high of 23 points vs. UMass Dartmouth on Feb. 14 and
season-highs of 13 rebounds vs. Roger Williams Dec. 1, six assists on
three occasions, three steals twice and one block three times. Payette
was ninth in the Little East in rebounding. |

|
As a junior
in 2004-05, Payette played in 29 games, starting nine of them. He
averaged 9.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. Payette
registered a season-high of 18 points three times and a career-high 14
rebounds and six assists vs. Lasell. Payette averaged 15.9 points, 5.9
rebounds and 2.0 assists as a starter over RIC’s last nine contests.
He hit the game-winning lay-up with seven seconds left in the game to
lead RIC past top-seeded Colby-Sawyer in the semi-finals of the ECAC
Tournament. |

|
As a
sophomore in 2003-04, he played in 24 games, starting 13 of them. He
averaged 4.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Payette registered
season-highs of 15 points vs. UMass-Dartmouth, seven rebounds vs.
UMass-Dartmouth and six assists vs. UMass-Boston. |

Payette
redshirted during the 2002-03 season. |
|
|
|
As a
freshman in 2001-02, he played in 25 games, starting 19 of them. He
averaged 8.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game
on the season. Payette scored a season-high 21 points vs. UMass
Boston. He tallied 15 points in the Anchormen’s lone win of the season
vs. Bridgewater State. |

Payette is a
physical education/health major and a 2001 graduate of Woonsocket High
School. |

|
|
Junior guard
Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) was named First-Team All Little
East Conference and also earned All-LEC Defensive Team honors. He
played in 29 games, starting all of them. He averaged a team-high 13.2
points, 3.8 assists and 1.2 steals, to go along with 4.8 rebounds per
game. He registered season-highs of 23 points and four steals vs.
Western Connecticut on Feb. 7, 11 rebounds vs. Bridgewater State on
Jan. 5 and ten assists vs. Coast Guard on Jan. 30. Durgin was named
LEC Player of the Week once of the season. Durgin was tenth in the
Little East in scoring and fifth in assists. He averaged 2.32
three-point field goals made per game, which ranked him sixth in the
LEC. |

Junior
forward Anthony Pierlioni (Plainville, CT) played in 27 games,
starting 13 of them. He averaged 3.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
He registered season-highs of 11 points and 11 rebounds vs. UMass
Boston on Feb. 18, three blocks vs. Johnson & Wales on Dec. 6 and two
steals three times. |

|
Junior
forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) played in 28 games, starting
19 of them. He averaged 8.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per
game. He registered season-highs of 29 points vs. Coast Guard on Mar.
1, ten rebounds vs. Wheaton on Mar. 4, three assists on three
occasions, two blocks three times, and two steals several times.
Stanko hit seven three-pointers vs. Coast Guard on Mar. 1 and then hit
seven more vs. Keene State on Mar. 3. The seven treys tied the RIC
record for three-pointers made in a single game. |

|
Junior
forward John Weir (Danbury, CT) played in 29 games, starting
nine of them. He averaged 4.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-high 1.1
blocks per game. He registered season-highs of 16 points and 14
rebounds vs. Johnson & Wales on Dec. 6, two assists vs. Keene State on
Jan. 21, five blocks vs. Salve Regina on Dec. 8 and three steals vs.
Coast Guard on Mar. 1. Weir was third in the Little East in
blocks-per-game average. |

|
Junior guard
Kamari Williams (Springfield, MA) played in 29 games, starting
24 of them. He averaged 10.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1
steals per game. Williams registered season-highs of 28 points vs.
Keene State on Dec. 3, five rebounds twice, five assists four times
and three steals three times. On Feb. 11 vs. Southern Maine, Williams
became the 26th member of the RIC Men’s Basketball 1,000
Point Club. He currently ranks 21st all-time at RIC with
1,062 career points. Williams also currently ranks 11th
all-time at RIC with 269 career assists. |

|
Sophomore
guard Ondinis Almanzar (New York, NY) played in three games,
missing most of the season due to an injury. He averaged 3.7 points
and 3.3 rebounds per game. He registered season-highs of 11 points,
seven rebounds and one assist vs. Fitchburg State on Nov. 29. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
forward Kevin Keefe (Cumberland, RI) played in nine games. He
averaged 0.6 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. He registered
season-highs of two points twice, four rebounds vs. Western
Connecticut on Feb. 7 and one steal vs. Salve Regina on Dec. 8. |

Sophomore
guard Benjy Nichols (New Haven, CT) played in 29 games,
starting two of them. He averaged 3.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per
game. He registered season-highs of ten points vs. Fitchburg State on
Nov. 29, nine rebounds vs. Southern Maine on Feb. 11 and two assists
vs. Western Connecticut on Feb. 21. |

Freshman
guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) played in 25 games, starting
three of them. He averaged 5.0 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.9 assists
per game. He registered season-highs of 13 points vs. UMass Boston on
Feb. 24, four rebounds twice, three assists twice and three steals vs.
Coast Guard on Mar. 1. |

Freshman
forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) was named to the Little
East Conference Men’s Basketball All-Rookie Team. He played in 28
games, starting 12 of them. He averaged 7.1 points and was second on
the team with 5.9 rebounds per game. He registered season-highs of 19
points vs. Mount Ida on Nov. 18, 12 rebounds vs. Keene State on Jan.
21, two assists four times and four steals vs. Southern Maine on Jan.
10. Johnson was named LEC Rookie of the Week twice on the season. |

Freshman
guard Matt St. Ours (West Greenwich, RI) played in seven games.
He averaged 2.0 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. He registered
season-highs of five points twice, three rebounds and one steal vs.
Fitchburg State on Nov. 29 and one assist twice. |
|
|
|
Freshman
guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) was named to the Little
East Conference Men’s Basketball All-Rookie Team. He played in 25
games. He averaged 5.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 0.9
steals per game. He registered season-highs of 18 points vs. Coast
Guard on Jan. 30, six rebounds vs. UMass Boston on Feb. 18, four
assists vs. Southern Maine on Feb. 11, two blocks vs. Southern Maine
on Jan. 10 and five steals vs. Plymouth State on Jan. 28. His .456
(26-57) three-point field goal percentage ranked him fourth in the
Little East. |
