Chartier Earns First Win as Anchorwomen Coach
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College opened the season with a 3-0, shutout victory over

afternoon. RIC Head Women’s Soccer Coach Denis Chartier earned
his first win as a collegiate head coach in the victory. |

The
Anchorwomen hammered the Griffins offensively, outshooting Fontbonne,
29-3. RIC also dominated with a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal. |

|
|
Junior
forward Lindsay Laurie (Warwick, RI) scored what proved to be
the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute, punching in a
junior forward Brittney Godbout (Cranston, RI) shot to give RIC
a 1-0 lead. |

|
Despite the
offensive onslaught, Fontbonne kept RIC off the board until the 79th
minute when senior forward Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA)
scored on a touch-pass from Godbout inside the box. Junior forward
Gina Calenda (Warren, RI) added another insurance goal six minutes
later, converting on a freshman midfielder Cristina Tavana
(Middletown, CT) pass. |

Anchorwoman
sophomore goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made three
stops, including a key diving save late in the game, to earn her fifth
career shutout. |

Fontbonne
senior goalkeeper Claire Ward (St. Louis, MO) was under
constant pressure all afternoon and held RIC to a one-goal lead until
late in the second half. Ward made 24 saves in a losing effort. The
