ANCHORMEN WIN HOME OPENER, 4-1,
Hernandez & Genereux Notch Goal & Assist Apiece

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College defeated M.I.T., 4-1, in the Anchormen’s home opener on Saturday afternoon. RIC ups its record to 2-0, while M.I.T. suffers its first loss of the 2006 campaign and falls to 2-1.

 

Rhode Island College junior forward Jimmy Hernandez (Providence, RI) headed in a junior midfielder Julian Montoya (North Providence, RI) crossing pass to open the day’s scoring in the 17th minute. Junior forward Kyle Genereux (Harrisville, RI) converted an Engineer turnover to up the Anchormen’s lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute. M.I.T. got on the board in the 39th minute as senior forward Ryan Sheffler (Beaumont, TX) scored on a penalty kick.

 

The Anchormen kept up the offensive pressure in the second half as Hernandez found sophomore midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) coming down the middle of the box with a crisp pass that was converted into RIC’s third goal of the day in the 60th minute. Junior midfielder Derek Rocha (Fall River, MA) sealed the win with the club’s fourth goal in the 68th minute, scoring on a Genereux pass.

 

RIC outshot M.I.T. 16-7 as both Hernandez and Genereux each scored a goal and recorded an assist. Junior goalkeeper Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, MA) made four saves to notch his first win of the season. The 2-0 Anchormen have allowed only two goals in two games, both of which came on penalty kicks.

 

M.I.T. senior goalkeeper Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, PA) made six saves in a losing effort before giving way to freshman goalkeeper Javier Duarte (Coram, NY) in the 87th minute.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Southern Maine on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
