Eastern Connecticut Takes Two at
LEC Tri-Match
Anchorwomen Split & Plymouth State Drops Two

Providence, RI—Eastern
Connecticut State University defeated Rhode Island College, 3-2, and
Plymouth State, 3-2, to improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the Little
East Conference in collegiate women’s volleyball action. Each of the
three matches on the day were decided in five games in very
competitive fashion. Rhode Island College defeated Plymouth State,
3-2, to improve to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the LEC, while the Panthers
suffer their first two losses of the 2006 campaign and fall to 5-2
overall and 0-2 in the Little East. |

The
Warriors nipped RIC in the fifth and deciding game, 17-15, of match
one to earn the victory. Sophomore middle blocker Emma Sousa
(Coventry, CT) led the way with 20 kills. Senior libero
Marianna Capomolla (Stamford, CT) recorded a match-high 35 digs,
while junior setter Priscilla Dougherty (Island Park, NY)
handed out a team-high 18 assists. RIC senior middle hitter Erin
Miga (Cranston, RI) led all attackers with a match-high 21 kills
to go along with ten blocks. Senior libero Stephanie Wojciechowski
(North Kingstown, RI) posted 18 digs, while junior setter
Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) had 29 assists. |

Eastern
Connecticut came out on fire against Plymouth State in the afternoon’s
second contest and won games one and two fairly easily. The Panthers
stormed back in games three and four, before the Warriors regained the
advantage in game five to take the match. ECSU’s Sousa posted 15 kills
and eight blocks, while junior setter Jen Braswell (Wilton, CT)
posted nine kills and four service aces. Capomolla once again led the
squad with 23 assists. Plymouth State sophomore middle hitter
Michaela Del Rosso (East Providence, RI) had nine kills, while
freshman setter Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, CT) handed out 35
assists. Sophomore libero Sarah Spears (Meredith, NH) was
credited with 24 digs. |

The
tri-match’s finale pitted RIC against Plymouth State, both of which
had one conference loss on the day heading into the contest. The
Anchorwomen took games two and three, while the Panthers countered
with victories in games one and four. RIC held off PSU in game five,
15-8, to earn its first LEC win of the year. Miga led RIC with 15
kills, while junior outside hitter Madison Greene (Cranston, RI)
was just three off the pace. The junior setter tandem of Amy Souza
(Tiverton, RI) and Rosa combined for 48 assists with 25 and 23,
respectively. Wojciechowski registered 26 digs. Del Rosso led PSU with
13 kills, while Spears had 20 digs. |
