BOSTON, MA –
Senior defender Mike Reda (Medford,
MA) converted the
game-winner on a penalty kick and later added an assist to lead the
University of Massachusetts
Boston men’s soccer team over
visiting Rhode Island College, 3-1, today in a Little East Conference
match at the Clark Athletic
Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 6-2-0
overall and 1-1-0 in LEC play with their first victory over the
Anchormen since a 3-0 win in Providence, RI on November 1, 1997. The
Anchormen fall to 3-2-0 and 1-1-0. |

Reda maintained his perfection on
penalty kicks, converting his third try of the season at 60:26 of the
second half to give UMass Boston a 2-1 edge. The senior co-captain
later lifted a cross to junior midfielder Emile Pierre-Louis (Medford,
MA) who redirected a header
over the Rhode Island College keeper and into the back of the net at
76:52 of the second stanza for a 3-1 advantage. |
|
|
|
The Beacons got on the board first
when junior midfielder Maynor Sanchez (Boston,
MA) sent a cross in front
of the net, where freshman midfielder Igor DaCruz (Cambridge,
MA) collected it and
deposited it into the left side of the net for his first collegiate
goal at the 23:28 mark and a 1-0 UMB margin. |
|
|
|
Brandon Migliore
found Jimmy Hernandez, who tracked the ball down just before it
made it to the end line and, with the Beacons’ keeper out of the net,
tapped it into the net to knot the match at 1-1 for the Anchormen with
28:32 gone in the first half. |
|
|
|
Sophomore keeper Paul Maniscalco (Hanover,
MA) stopped six shots for
UMass Boston to earn the victory, while Sean Gonsalves made seven
saves for Rhode Island College. |
|
|
|
The Beacons will be in action again on
Tuesday, September 26 when they host Salem State College at the Clark
Athletic Center Field at 3:30 p.m., while the Anchormen travel to
Worcester,
MA on September 27 to take on Clark
