RIC Extends Streak With Win Over Salve
Regina, 2-1 |
|
|
|
NEWPORT, R.I. –The Rhode Island College
women's soccer team won its sixth straight game as the visiting
Anchorwomen edged Salve Regina University, 2-1, this afternoon in
non-conference action. With the victory, RIC tied the program's
longest single-season winning streak and matched the Anchorwomen's
best start. |
|
|
|
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Denis
Chartier, RIC (8-1-0) is unbeaten in its past six games, a streak
which began on Sept. 9 with a 3-1 victory over De Sales University in
the finale of the Mule Classic. The present corps of Anchorwomen share
the single-season record with the 1999 and 2005 squads. |
|
|
|
Throughout the present winning streak, RIC has
outscored the opposition 12-0 in the opening half. The Anchorwomen
continued their successful formula as junior striker Gina Calenda
(Warren, RI) converted off a feed from classmate Lindsay Laurie
(Warwick, RI) in the 18th minute. The visitors increased their
advantage, when senior forward Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA)
netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 34th minute.
The assist was credited to junior defender Kerry Donahue (Rehoboth,
MA). |

|
The
Seahawks (4-6-0) scored their lone goal in the 53rd minute. RIC's
relentless defensive effort limited the hosts to just three shots.
Sophomore goaltender Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made a save
to collect her eighth victory of the season, while Nicole Ferreira
turned back 13 Anchorwomen offerings. |

RIC
returns to action at 4 p.m. on Sept. 28, when the Anchorwomen travel
to Framingham State for a non-conference contest. |
